THE PRIZE MACHINE

When you don't have a character in Crossy Road, both the name and the character itself is grayed out and they don't spin around in the character menu. However, when you do have a character, they are spinning, their name is made white, and they are in full color. When you have just unlocked a character, they will also be jumping while they spin.

Free gifts are given every three hours (at least for me). The amount of coins in the free gift ranges from about 40 to 520. Back then, they used to give you about more than 200 each time. To get another free gift, you have to complete a task such as hopping 300 times, scaring 3-4 birds and jumping on 10-12 lilypads or logs (it varies). With that being said, and without further ado, let's talk about the prize machine.

The prize machine is the key to winning a majority of the characters here. It's a more efficient way and you don't have to piss away any money on characters because you have this way. To unlock a character costs 100 coins that you can find throughout the game terrain, which I will get to explaining now. A quick disclaimer, pardon the low quality, I got these images from the official Crossy Road Wikia at https://crossyroad.fandom.com/wiki/Coins?so=search.

The yellow coin is the most commonly-found coin

The yellow coin is the most commonly-found coin. You can find it anywhere in the terrain. On lanes, grass, lilypads, logs, crocodiles, and even secret characters in the river. It's worth is 1 coin added to your coin count, found at the top right of each gameplay. When picked up, it makes a short 3-note sound (E, F#, A) although it's pitch is not consistent. It varies.

The red coin is only accessible if you have the piggy bank

The red coin is only accessible if you have the piggy bank. They're not too rare, as they're about as accessible as the yellow coin. You can find them in all of the aforementioned locations. It's worth is 5 coins added to your coin count, found at the top right of each gameplay. When picked up, it makes a short 4-note sound (E, F#, A, C) and unlike the yellow coin, the red coin's pitch is consistent.

Okay now let's get down to business.

The prize machine is the key to unlocking a majority of characters, as stated before. When you press the prize machine, it makes a sound like a regular arcade prize machine. In earlier versions of the game, there was also a little tune that plays while the prize machine does it's thing. It sounds like an electric-piano, set in C major.

When a new character is unlocked, it will make a joyous fanfare set in D major. When a character is duplicated (meaning a character you already have, shows up in the prize machine) it will make a boring, very quick fanfare set in F major, and that fanfare is the same as when you beat your high score, or get a score close to it. With that being said, let's move on to secret characters and characters unlockable by tokens only.
