There are secret characters in Crossy Road that cannot be unlocked by the prize machine. These characters you also cannot pay for. There are also characters that can be unlocked through winning tokens. These characters are blacked out because they are, well, secret. The secret characters usually have a unique way of unlocking then, usually through the actions of other mascots, or maybe finding them in a river.

These characters require another mascot to unlock them, or in some cases, a whole category of mascots to unlock them. Usually they require small actions to unlock them. I'm not going to get into how to unlock them all now, that is for the categories.
To unlock the token characters, you have to play through the Pecking Order, explained in the next chapter, and click the little advertisements leading up to the free token gift. Also, at the end of a regular Crossy Road run, you can click the advertisement leading to the free token gift. This banner is green.

So altogether, that makes 60 non-limited-time secret characters on Crossy Road. They say the Merlady is limited time but I don't think she will ever be removed at this point. With that all being stated, let's move on to the Pecking Order.
