Later that evening, I was sitting with Jonathan and the Americans, (who to our luck were trying to find Hamunaptra too) , and playing a game of poker. I was mildly surprised that the men had allowed me, a woman, in on their game.
I think they were beginning to regret it since I was winning. "Looking to make a wager, O Connell?" Henderson, a shaggy man with long blonde hair piped up. I looked up, but then realized he wouldn't call me O Connell.
Since I was a woman, he would call me ma'am or miss out of politeness. "I bet we can make it to Hamunaptra before you." Henderson said and I looked behind me to see Rick standing there.
"How did you know we were looking for Hamunaptra?" Rick asked, glancing suspiciously down at Jonathan, who gulped. I told Jonathan not to say anything, but he couldn't help himself. He was a gambler at heart.
"Well, I'll be willing to make a bet." Rick said and I groaned inwardly. What was it with men and gambling?
"Your funeral, O Connell." Burns, a man with brown hair and thick glasses said. I rolled my eyes at this. "What makes you so sure?" Rick said, leaning against Jonathan's chair. "Well, we've got ourselves a man whose actually been there." Henderson said proudly. I wondered who they had guiding them.
"What a coincidence because O Connell-" Jonathan was cut off by me kicking him in the leg and Rick gripping him by the shoulder. "I'll take that bet, gentleman. Goodnight Jonathan." Rick said, clenching Jonathan's shoulder his hand as a warning. I shot Jonathan a warning look of my own before laying my cards on the table.
"You all keep playing without me. I'm sure it'll be much easier." I stated before walking off with a smirk.
I walked onto the deck where Evie was sitting at a small table, book in her hand. I grinned as Rick slammed a bag across the table. I sat down beside Evie as she jumped from the sound. "Sorry didn't mean to scare ya." Rick said cheekily. Evie peered over her book at him.
"The only thing that scares me are your manners." She told him icily. "Still angry about that kiss, huh?" Rick asked her, sitting down at the table. "If you call that a kiss." Evie retorted. I chuckled at their banter, and Evie turned to me. "Addy, where have you been? I've hardly seen you." She said, smiling at me.
"Just playing poker." I told her casually. "Of course you were." She said and her tone sounded like an amused mother. Which was strange, considering Evie was only one year older. I guessed it was because she'd been watching out for me ever since I met her.
"That's Addy. She'll play any deck you give her." Rick said, opening up the bag to reveal tons of ammunition and weapons. Of course, Rick's battle bag. "Did I miss something? Are we going into battle?" Evie asked Rick, glancing nervously at the overload of weapons.
"There's something out there, something underneath that sand." Rick said, taking out one of his pistols. "What do you think is out there?" Evie said, looking at the pistol with distaste. Evie hated guns and fighting. She believed in the power of knowledge over violence. I myself believed in protecting myself and my family at any cost.
"In a word, evil." Rick said and for some reason, I shuddered. Evie or Rick didn't seem to notice, they were staring intensely at each other again. "Well, I'm looking for something else when we get there. It's said to be the resting place of the Book of Amun-Ra." Evie said cheerily. She was always happiest when she was talking about Egypt.
Evie told me that her mother was an Egyptian herself, and her father was an amazing explorer. I could definitely see the traits in her and her brother.
"It's what interested me in Egypt as a child. That's why I came here, sort of a life's pursuit." Evie told Rick and he smirked.
"The fact that it's supposed to be made of pure gold means nothing to you?" Rick said with an amused glance at Evie. "You know your history." Evie said and her face lit up. This probably made her opinion of him rise a few notches in her mind.
