I watched in horror as the crowd started to descend on us. I tried to quell the rising panic I felt as I raised my pistol.
Rick glanced down and saw a drainage cover. "Guys! In here." Rick said and I glanced at the drainage cover in relief. Normally I would look at it in disgust, but when you had an angry mob after you, the sewers started to look very nice.
"Addy first!" Rick said and I climbed down into the sewer. Ardeth dropped down beside me next. I glanced up nervously waiting for Rick and Jonathan. Jonathan jumped down them and I pulled him into a hug.
He hugged me back tightly and I leaned back, looking at him closely. "Addy-" Jonathan started, but Rick hopped down then, and we pulled away. "Where's Dr. Bey?" Ardeth asked Rick , and my stomach dropped. Rick shook his head. "I- I tried to stop him. He fought to the end."
"What do we do?" I asked Rick
as we walked down the tunnels. "I think I know where we can get help." He said, and I glanced at Ardeth and Jonathan. "Who would want to help us?" I asked Rick. "Someone who doesn't care about the outcome." He answered and I gave him a confused look.
A few hours later, we had reached the home of Winston, an older man that Rick said could help us. Rick had explained that Winston served in the Great War and all of his friends died, but he had survived. "Winston!" Rick said as we climbed through the sand. Winston was sitting in a lawn chair with a radio playing.
"O Connell! What can I do for you, lad?" Winston asked, glancing at Ardeth, Jonathan, and I. Rick grinned at the man. "We need your help on a mission." He told him, and Rick leaned forward eagerly. "Ooh. Is it dangerous?" Winston asked, and I didn't understand how someone could crave danger so badly.
"You probably won't survive it." I told Winston and he grinned, jumping up with surprising speed for an elderly man. "Well, what are we waiting for?" He said to us, and showed us to a two man plane.
I tried to push down the fear I felt building up. "Rick, did I ever tell you I was afraid of heights?" I asked nervously and the men turned to look at me. "Well, if you want to stay-" Rick started and I groaned. "No!"
I regretted my decision as Rick strapped Jonathan and I to a wing of the plane. Ardeth strapped himself onto the other wing. I glanced over at Jonathan, my stomach turning. "Are you sure this will hold, O Connell?" Jonathan asked Rick, seeing the look on my face.
"I hope so." Rick told him and I groaned. "Rick, if we make it out of this alive, I'm going to kill you!" I said angrily, and Rick nodded like he understood. "I won't blame you." He told me, climbing into the plane beside Winston.
The plane started to take off then and I grabbed Jonathan's hand. "It's okay, just don't look down." Jonathan told me, and I immediately did it anyways. We were about ten thousand feet up. All I could see was sand under us. I let out a shriek. "I said not to look down." Jonathan said in an I-told-you-so tone.
"Jon, please don't let go." I told him and he grasped my hand tightly. "I won't." He said, and I looked into his blue eyes. Looking into his eyes felt like seeing into his soul. He was the only person who truly knew my soul, in and our. I leaned forward and placed my head on his shoulder. The rest of the plane ride, Jonathan and I stayed the same way.
I heard the sound of heavy wind and glanced back to see a humongous sandstorm headed our way. I braced myself for the sand I knew would come flying our direction any minute. "Have you ever see one that big?" Rick yelled to Winston over the roars of wind. "No!" Winston yelled back as he steered the plane downwards, causing Jonathan and I to slide forwards.
I screamed and held onto him tightly as the straps caught us again. "You alright back there?" Rick asked us, glancing back at us . "DO I LOOK ALRIGHT, RICK?" I screamed at him, giving him a look that told him to back off.
He blanched and turned back to look ahead. I heard a loud roar as the sand took a face-like form in front of us. "Imhotep." I muttered as the sand hit us. It blew Jonathan and I farther apart, and I felt his hand be snatched from mine by the wind. I could feel the wind yanking the straps holding us in place loose.
I felt the strap on my side give and I let out a scream as I started to slide off the wing. This was not how I wanted to go. I reached desperately for Jonathan's hand. "Addy!" Rick and Jonathan yelled. I grabbed onto the side of the wing, clinging onto it as hard as I could. I blew to one side, making me lose my grip, and I screamed as I started to plummet.
I came to a stop immediately and I opened my eyes, looking up. Jonathan had leapt to catch me and had caught my hand.
Jonathan groaned and pulled me up, and I was shaking. The sandstorm stopped immediately and I wondered if Imhotep had given up. He must have thought we were dead. Well, he was almost successful in killing one of us.
I let out a yell as the plane dipped downwards. The propellor stopped and we descended rapidly and landed on a sand dune. The plane came to a crashing halt, and I felt like I was going to throw up.
Rick climbed out of the plane, and unstrapped Jonathan and I. I stood up shakily. "Don't ever scare me like that again!" Rick told me and I jumped into his arms, letting out a sob I'd been holding back. I let go of Rick and hugged Jonathan.
I felt safe in his arms. It was the only place I felt like I belonged. I pulled away and looked at him. I had to tell him I loved him, it was now or never. I couldn't die and not have told him. "I have to tell you something and if I don't tell you now, I might never have the chance." I told him, and he looked at me intensely, his blue eyes shining. He looked as if he wanted to tell me something too. "I-"
"I'm really sorry, but we have to go." Ardeth said to us, snatching a machine gun off the plane. The words love you hung in my throat.
