Blackness. I was captured by blackness, it captured my eyes, and set off a ringing in my ears. I was sure I was dead.
"Evie! The book of Amun-Ra! I've found it!"
I instantly felt better when I heard his voice.
Had he died too? Was this heaven? Why was he talking to Evie then, and why couldn't I see them?
Why didn't I hear Rick? I couldn't be dead, or Id see them. I knew it , and I tried to force my eyes open, but they wouldn't budge. "Jonathan, you idiot get me out of here!" I heard Evie yell frantically. "Addy!" I heard Jonathan yell and my heart constricted. What if he thought I was dead? I pushed against the muscles in my eyes, willing them to move.
"What happened to her!?" Jonathan yelled again, his voice sounding like he was holding back tears. He sounded as if he was shouting from a distance.
"Open the book, Jonathan! Find the inscription it's the only way to kill him! Addy will come through, I promise!" Evie shouted, and her voice was shaky as she said my name. "I cant open it! It needs the key, Evie!" Jonathan yelled, and he sounded fearful. "The key is in his robes, Jon!" Evie yelled back.
I gritted my teeth. They needed me. I forced my eyes to open then. I could see Evie still chained to the table. My vision was blurry, as if I was looking through clouded glass. I stood up shakily, and felt a wave of nausea. I had to fight through it. My family was in danger. I looked up to see Jonathan on the stairs, Imhotep coming his way. I wanted to run and help, but I had to help Evie first.
I rushed over, and yanked on the chains with all my strength. "Addy!" Evie exclaimed in relief. I snatched my hand back as a sword cut a restraint holding Evie's arm.
I looked up to see Rick. A million emotions were flowing through my mind, each too fast to decipher. My brother was alive. If only we could stay alive. "Rick!" Evie said happily, and Rick smiled at each of us. A deafening roar filled the room. I turned slowly to see Imhotep's enraged face.
Imhotep shouted a command in ancient Egyptian, it probably was along the lines of 'kill them,' because an army of mummy soldiers barreled towards us. I had about one second to react. I pulled out my pistol and shot one in the arm. Another one came up behind me and swung a sword at me. I ducked under it and fired a shot to the legs.
There were about five more priests and they were making their way to Rick and Evie.
Evie sat up and pulled at the chains detaining her left arm and her ankles. Rick fought off the mummies, and he turned to us as he stabbed the last one.
"Mummies." He said , shrugging and making a funny face. I was honestly surprised he could make a joke at a time like this.
Rick yelped as a mummy yanked him by his leg, dropping him on the ground. "Rick!" I yelled, while shooting one of the mummies. I tried to count while dodging their attacks. There were too many of them. Had they been regenerating?
My eyes widened as the mummies held Rick down. He was struggling to grab his sword, but it wasn't close enough. I wanted to help, but I couldn't get through, not while fighting the mummies.
Think, think. How can I help Rick? A mummy raised a stone tablet, and roared.
"His legs! Rick! Cut his legs!" I screamed hysterically. Rick reached over and grabbed the sword, and sent a swift cut to the mummy's legs. It fell over with a groan, the tablet crushing it.
I sent the final shot to the mummy attacking me and rushed over to Rick and Evie. Rick cut off Evie's remaining chains. I pulled her off the altar, enveloping her in a tight hug. I looked back to where Jonathan was, but he had vanished. And so had Imhotep.
"Jonathan? Where's Jonathan?" I asked, losing my nerve. "I don't know." Evie said , her voice cracking,as if she was trying not to think the worst. I looked at the altar again. "Where did Anucksunamun go?" I asked, only to see Anucksunamun rushing up to us. "Run!" I shrieked to Evie, who did so immediately. Anucksunamun followed after her.
"Jon!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. I didn't care if Imhotep heard me. I heard nothing. "Jonathan! Please answer me!" I screamed again, and once again I heard nothing but silence.
I felt the familiar lump in my throat. Was he gone? The grief felt like ocean tides, pulling me into its depths. How would I go on without him? I wanted to fall then, to just give up. To stop fighting. There was nothing left if he was gone.
Then I heard it. The sweetest sound I've ever heard. "Addy!"
It was faint, like he was struggling to get to me. The feeling in my throat left and all I felt was relief. Pure, amazing, relief. He was alive. And he needed me.
The army of mummies came back towards us again. How did they keep coming back, I thought to myself.
I had no idea how we were going to fight them off. "Jonathan, read the inscription, on the cover! You can control them!" Evie yelled from somewhere. I couldn't see her, but she didn't sound too far away.
I turned to Rick who was dodging the army's attacks. I ran to join him.
"Rick, how long can we hold them off?" I asked him, backing up with him. "Addy, I don't think we can." He said and then he turned to the mummy army and roared.
They roared back, holding up their swords. Rick and I slowly turned to look at each other. "No!" We both said, running away from the mummies. I ran after Rick, trying not to fall on the temple floor. The mummies were faster than us, and every time we turned, they were behind us.
Rick and I ran until we reached a corner. We had no where to run, nowhere to go. The priests walked slowly towards us. "Rick? Have any ideas?" I asked him, and he shook his head. "I hate to say it, but no."
I ducked as the swords flew towards me. I threw my hands in front of me and squeezed my eyes shut. Jonathan yelled something in Ancient Egyptian and I opened my eyes to see the swords inches from my face.
I stood up and looked over to see Jonathan standing at the top of the stairs, holding the book of Amun-Ra. "Jon!" I yelled happily. I'd thought he was gone, just for that one small second. Now everything was better again. I was whole again. "Addy!" Jonathan called, his voice full of relief and a happiness of its own.
Jonathan took a step forward and Imhotep turned to him. Jonathan's features became overwhelmed with fear. He backed up as Imhotep glared at him. The priests turned in obedience as Jonathan shouted another command at them.
I heard Evie's strangled cry for help.
Jonathan glanced down to the book hurriedly. "Fa kooskah Anucksunamun!" Jonathan yelled, and Imhotep roared in anger. I backed away as the army marched to Anucksunamun. Evie ran towards us, and I pulled her into my arms.
The army held up their swords and in one strike, Anucksunamun was gone. "NO!" Imhotep yelled, his face despaired. He slowly turned to Jonathan who backed away. I let go of Evie to rush after them. I barely made it up the stairs, stumbling on one step.
I saw Imhotep had Jonathan pinned to the wall in a chokehold. "Now you die." Imhotep told him. I aimed my pistol and shot off his arm. "Let go of him, you bastard!" I said, and Imhotep turned to me.
