Soon after we'd arrived, we'd gotten ready for our search while the Americans and their workers pitched tents and unpacked.
Evie and I were now looking at a large statue. "That's the statue of Anubis. It's legs go deep underground. According to Bembridge scholars, that's where we'll find a secret compartment containing the golden book of Amun-Ra." Evie told me excitedly.
"The Bembridge scholars won't be able to deny you when we've found it." I told her excitedly. Evie turned to Jonathan who was dusting off a mirror with his hand. "Jonathan you're meant to catch the sun with that." She told him. Evie was very in her element here. It seemed like she was meant to be in Hamunaptra.
Rick had a bag in his hand as he walked over to us. He handed it to Evie. "This is for you. I figured you might need it for when you're, um," Rick said, making gestures with his hands, and I tried not to laugh.
"Okay." He said walking off quickly. "What are you looking at?" Rick said threateningly to the warden who immediately made himself busy.
Evie looked down at the bag and opened it. It was full of all sorts of equipment for digging and cleaning statues and other artifacts. She smiled widely and looked back up at Rick, who swung his way into the tombs. I glanced at Jonathan and grinned. He was watching the events play out with a horrified expression on his face.
We followed Rick down the rope, and I went after Jonathan. He grabbed my waist to help me down and I blushed. I was glad the lighting was so dim that he couldn't see it.
"Will this really work?" Rick asked, as we arranged the mirrors in the way Evie told us to.
"Yes, it's an Ancient Egyptian trick." I told Rick. "Let there be light!" Evie said grandly as she tweaked one of the mirrors and light flooded the room. "That's amazing." I told her as we looked around the tomb. Evie let out a squeal of happiness as she saw a statue.
"We're standing inside a room no one has entered in 3000 years." She said and I smiled at her. "My God it's a Sah- Netjar." Evie said happily. "What's that?" Rick asked, looking around the room.
"A preparation room for entering the afterlife." I told him and he smiled at me. "How do you know all this?" He asked, and I glanced at Evie. "I had a good teacher." I said, smiling.
"Mummies, my good son, this is where they made the mummies." Jonathan said, patting Rick on the shoulder. I tried not to laugh at the expression on Rick's face as we walked into a passageway.
I was holding a torch, while Rick was holding a torch in one hand and his pistol in the other. I figured he thought it was better that we were prepared, just in case. We heard loud skittering noises and I shivered. "What was that?" Evie asked Rick nervously. "Sounds like bugs." He answered and the warden, who I had forgotten was even with us, shivered. "I hate bugs." He said, sounding frightened.
We walked into a large room and heard loud noises echoing around us. Rick pushed us all behind a wall and handed his torch to Evie. He pulled out his other pistol. He then reached into his back pocket and pulled another pistol out. He held it out to me and I took it, swinging the hammer back for good measure.
Jonathan looked at me in shock. He'd never seen this side of me before. I supposed I'd never let on that I was a pretty good shot before.
Rick and I turned the corner and came face to face with the Americans. Oh great. It was only them.
"You scared the bejesus out of us, O Connell." Burns exclaimed and I rolled my eyes at him. Evie and Jonathan came from behind the wall then, looking relived and a bit annoyed. "Likewise." Rick told them, putting his gun down. "Is that my tool kit?" Burns asked, looking at the kit in Evie's arms.
