Drowning World
It was dismal, there were no birds that chirped when you woke up. The sky had been dark for months now, and those that lived either were just like us...or just like them. I hated the realization of what my life was, but he made it seem so worth it.
"Abigail? Are you awake?" I decided to wake up each day because of him. I stirred on the old mattress we had found. The house we stayed in was abandoned and worn in, but it protected us at the end of the day. We built it up and survived in it.
"Yeah...I wish I wasn't," He sat on the end of the bed and rubbed slow circles on my calves.
"Don't say that, I love it when you wake up!" I smiled from under the old blanket. It had holes in it, so it wasn't the best, but it was nice.
"I love you next to me! Where have you been?" He usually was next to me in bed when I woke up, but today Beck was dressed and ready to go.
"I found something! I want to go check it out with you, but I went to get some water from the river to boil, and I noticed we were running low! I found this weird fenced area, it looks like an old supermarket or something is behind it! I think we can maybe find food!" I sat up to look at him, he had his dirty blonde hair tied up in a braid. I loved staring into those gray eyes of his forever.
"Do you think any of it would be good still? Besides...it would be looted by now right? I don't know if this is the best idea," He kissed my lips softly for reassurance.
"Babe, if it goes wrong I got us. Just trust me!" I smiled at him and kissed him deeply. I loved the way his body felt against mine! The warmth of him pressed up against me, it made the world disappear in his arms. I found myself pulling off my shirt, I knew what I wanted when I woke up. We had to at least start the day as if the outside wasn't a complete fucking disaster.
I bit at his neck as he took my small breasts in his hands, I could feel the wear and tear of our way of life on my skin, but his touch was soothing.
"What would you like?" He kissed the words against my lips as he caressed me.
"You," It was like my word was his cue. Beck laid me back down on the bed and pulled off my panties. I had had the same few pairs just like him since the world ended, but that was nothing. I was butter melting in his hot pan of sensations. I found him sliding into me with ease, I was ready for him before my clothes came off, "You feel...good," I could barely pull the sentence from my mouth as he unraveled me. I enjoyed the one moment we had like this in a day, it could all go up in flames by the end of it.
"I'm close..." He whispered into my ear, his moans were pulling my body to its edge too. I felt my body give as he filled me. I was a shaking mess, but it was better than everything else! I loved when we could enjoy each other! Love felt rare at times in a bleak reality. We laid in bed for a while before I got up to get ready for the day. I grabbed a granola bar from the cabinet after I got clothes on, if we could find more food that would be a miracle! We had been living off of granola bars and canned vegetables for at least a week now.
I met him outside, the night sky glittered full of stars. The sun rarely rose anymore, scientists had done something to the gravitation of earth after the missile they said. They wanted to test breaking up asteroids and they fucked up! The downfall of the ozone layer made things toxic for a long time. Humans that could adapt, some became terrible things and others survived like us. It was our life now, there wasn't much else to it.
"Ready to go? We should be able to get back shortly if we hurry!" It was always terrifying to go outside. You never knew what would happen around the corner, but I let him guide me. I took his comforting, worn hand in mine and we walked. His flashlight led us through the dismal darkness. I could hear the sounds of things rummaging around us, but we kept low and quiet. I followed him silently the entire way to the fence. Beck led us through a forest with ease, beyond the cold metal was a large building. It seemed to stretch for miles as far as I could see.
"Are you sure about this?" I whispered to him softly.
"We don't know until we try!" He shrugged at me, "We have to at least check it out don't we?" I nodded in agreement, and then over the fence, we went. The lot seemed like it went forever. We were greeted with ease by opening the door in the back. He was right, inside it was a large store of some kind. His flashlight illuminated isles of stuff. I took out a small flashlight of my own. We searched, and I found a new blanket in a pile of abandoned ones.
"Dude! We have blankets now! No holes!" I was excited to pack a few neatly in my bag. We had brought extra storage bags for looting in case of this! The adventure was more than plentiful! We had begun to fill our bags with food that would last us weeks! We had plenty of new things to use at the house too! "I can't believe we found so much stuff!"
"We do have a lot! We could probably get going before we get too full!"
"Yeah! I think we have enough, we can always come back too!" He agreed with me and we made our way toward the exit. Before we got to the door, a long bang startled us. The commotion began to flood the building.
"Monsters..." He uttered a single word as they began to swarm the isles behind us. They were all drawn here for some reason, and we were about to get trapped. He pushed open the door as one let out a bone-chilling screech. Outside...they flooded the parking lot. I felt my chest tighten as panic set in.
"What do we do?" Beck grabbed my hand as tight as he could, and once again I was following him. He kept us as low and as quiet as we could. They seemed to be unable to see for the most part, but they could hear anything. One wrong move and they would tear us apart. I gripped at him as hard as I could. We had to stay silent, the fence was just beyond the beam of the flashlight. I could see our salvation! We made it! I tossed the bag over that had the blankets in it. We tossed a bag and waited. The sound could disturb them, and all was going well.
"Go first," His voice was stern with me, I nodded and went up. The fence was much more creaky than I remembered the first time. The noise as I climbed trembled through the parking lot. The monsters began to stir and run towards us. I jumped over to the other side.
"Come on! Hurry!" He started his climb as they poured over, he was climbing fast, "You got this!" He threw his backpack over the fence and jumped just as they crashed against it behind us. He was inches away from his life, seconds longer and they would've had him.
"Let's get this stuff back to the house!" We loaded ourselves back up and I grabbed his hand again. As soon as his warmth settled into my fingertips, it was snatched from me. Suddenly, instantly, he was torn from me as if he were never there.
"BECK!" I turned to see him fight a creature with claws for hands! Before I could run to help he was tumbling from the trees and grabbing my hand. We were running, everything around us was a blur! He took me and ran with me until we got back home. Realization hit. We tumbled inside and I watched him fall to the floor. My hand was coated in his blood. I rushed to his side, it seemed like he was bleeding from everywhere.
"I got you home!" He laughed as if this was a joke!
"You got us home! We are home!" I tore at my shirt to help stop the bleeding, he was torn up. I had no idea how he ran!
"You have to promise me to not give up, okay?" I felt tears burn in my eyes.
"No! Fuck that! You aren't going to fucking die and leave me! What am I going to do if you go?"
"Keep living..." He let out a soft breath in my arms.
"Beck?" I knew...I sat with him in my arms for a long time. He went from warm to cold in my lap. His hair still felt the same though. His same worn hands were still comforting, but he was long gone. Live....
"You told me to fucking live...as if...you weren't all I had to live for...." I sat there until I felt numb enough to walk outside, before I left I covered him with the blankets I found. He would be warm...wherever he was now. I cried, and I cried out loud when I went outside. Either way, they would hear me, and I had nothing left. I let the memories of his stupid laugh overtake me. He was the one that made a fun situation out of anything.... All the years he had been with me, I couldn't imagine anyone else to bring on this shit show with.
"S-sorry...you were all I had..." The pain...of being ripped apart was nothing. I was swarmed within moments by the creatures. Some ate at me, others just worked to tear at me, I felt it all, but he sat in my mind like a warm, summer day. He was the song that got stuck in your song that you always dance to, so even death was peaceful. I just hoped...I had him.
