The cover of your book is the first impression they get. It's basically the beautiful wrapping paper for the gift.

The best way to make a cover is using images from Pinterest and finding an app (I recommend Canva) to create one on. Canva is my favourite cover app - you can use templates and many editing tools. If you want to add text, Phonto is the go-to app as it has a variety of fonts and is probably the best text app out there.

When it comes to covers it's very easy to go wrong, sometimes it can be too simple or too messy and you need to find the right balance. You can always work from other covers or gain inspiration from them (though you should let the creator know, they deserve credit).

When you add writing to your cover, MAKE SURE the writing is ALL on ONE colour piece of background or else it looks strange and try not to make the writing multicoloured as that is a very common mistake; it just doesn't look right. Sometimes a black and white theme helps for the background if you put a bright colour on black or a dark colour on white. This is also probably the time to mention colour schemes - remember the colour wheel from primary school? Use that for help if you need to, your cover depends on colour!

I also find it's important to include your name/username on the cover to ensure people know who the author is just by looking at the cover. It may seem like this minor detail is insignificant but many times I have looked at a cover and thought 'wait, this is by the person who wrote that book' so I choose to read that book too.

Don't forget - if you realise you're not the best at making covers and no matter what you do you can't create a good one - there are MANY covershops who make brilliant covers. You SHOULD NOT ask multiple people to make covers at the same time, that's called shophopping and it's very rude! People spend a lot of time making covers and if you want them to change something they've made for you just ask!

Some covershops may have payment (follow, votes etc. it depends on the covershop) and some don't. In general, using a covershop is very easy as long as you follow their rules and regulations. Please be respectful and polite to the creator!
