Feeling the train start to slow, I opened my eyes and raised my head from his shoulder. We had resumed our previous position, leaning against the wall of the car to try and get some shut eye, but I wasn't able to sleep. I just rested my eyes, listening to the steady beating of his heart as we snuggled together for warmth. Our clothes were still damp and filthy and I couldn't wait to change them.
I tapped Aiden on the chest, hearing his soft snores. I didn't mind being the look out as he slept, knowing he went through hell and deserved to have some rest, and I knew he was going to do the same for me once we were in a safe house.
Aiden grunted awake, looking around quickly before blinking his eyes. "Did we stop?" He asked.
"I think we're about to." I said, standing up as the train's break made a loud squealing sound that reminded me of a New York City train. God, I missed the city. Who the fuck knows where we are now.
He was on my heels as soon as I started walking towards the sliding door that we left slightly open. I peeked out of the slit to the outside world. Night had fallen.. or maybe it was early morning now. No way to know until we get out of here. There was other trains and tracks around us, making me believe we were in a train yard.
Aiden peeked out from above me, crushing me to his chest as he held me in place. We both listened out for voices, but all I heard was slight scurrying from towards the end of the train. Possibly the others that made it on.
"Come on." He whispered and reached for the door and we both slid it open slowly and as silently as we could.
He held the gun I had grabbed around his shoulder, jumping into the empty track before us. He looked both ways quickly before nudging his head to the side, motioning for someone down the way to go before he held out his hand for me like a gentleman, even though I didn't need it.
I took his hand and jumped down, looking around the train yard. I looked towards the back of the train where I saw Mason heading towards a wooden fence along with a few others who made it to the train. As Aiden started to move, I followed him, casually looking around us before we reached the fence. A knock on the fence came before a few others jumped over, Mason included.
Aiden nudged his head towards the top of the fence. "You need a boost?" He joked, a crooked smile on his face.
I rolled my yes playfully, refraining from smiling back at him and jumped over the small fence. On the other side looked like a highway. Around us was nothing but flat land, rocks and dry soil. In the far distance you can see mountain tops, but that was well over a days drive out there.
"Where are we?" I asked to nobody in particular.
"Have no fucking idea." Mason answered before starting to walk down the slope towards the highway.
Aiden was next to me in an instant, watching as a few soldiers began to jog towards Mason. Aiden went to walk but I stopped him with my arm over his stomach. "We stick out like sore thumbs." I noted, looking down at the both of us.
All of us were in our camo fatigues, making it look like we belonged at a military base. If anyone saw us in a group together, they were going to start talking, because who knew where we were, or even if there was a military base anywhere around here, or if the facility's explosion made it on the news yet.
"Yeah, no shit." Aiden deadpanned before grabbing my hand and started to walk towards the highway.
We stopped at the edge of the road along with the others, seeing a soldier jog over towards us from up the road.
"California." He said. "I think near Mojave."
"Like the desert?" I asked stupidly, but I was tired so everyone could fuck off.
