Aiden

Her head dropped to my shoulder a few moments later, and mine automatically rested on top of her head. I inhaled deeply for a moment, steadying my breathing before exhaling. I didn't think the plan would work, truthfully. But to my surprise, we had a lot more of us that wanted freedom than those who wanted to be a caged animal, a soldier for the controller. All that mattered was that she was here, next to me.

"You're bleeding." Her head popped up instantly to look at me.

I shrugged, barely feeling the bullet that was in my back. The adrenaline was keeping my body numb from pain for at least a little while longer, but it was just a matter of time before my body ejects the foreign object out of me.

"I'm fine." I replied calmly, but she still went to move me, her fingers grazing over the entry hole on my back making me grunt a little.

"You're shot." She said, lifting my shirt in a bit of a panic.

I rolled my eyes as she assessed my wound. "I'll live."

"Damn right you will." She muttered under her breath, a bit of determination in her voice making me smile to myself.

I swatted her hands away gently as she tried to look at my wound further. "How are you feeling?" I asked, my eyes going between hers as I assessed her now.

"I'm fine." She said through her teeth. "Don't try and change the subject, you have a bullet in your back, Aiden."

She wasn't fine. I knew that. If it was anything I knew, I knew she was expressing so many emotions through her mind as every memory that was erased, came back to her in full force. The headaches, the suppressed memories, everything that could break a person would be hitting her. Just like it had done to me. She was strong, but I knew she wasn't that strong. She was going to need a outlet for those emotions soon so it wouldn't eat her up inside like it was starting to in that basement.

"And it'll come out eventually like it always does." She wasn't used to the new abilities. We get shot, it only slows us down momentarily. I have yet to find what could put us down permanently.

She blinked a few times and swallowed hard, her fingers rubbing against the side of the gun anxiously. "Like when you tried to kill yourself."

I blew out a breath as her words came out in barely a whisper. I could see it in her face. Guilt. Her eyes went to my chest that was splattered with dirt and blood spots from the ones I've killed to reach her. She was reliving the story I told her, of how I got shot in the chest purposely, only to get woken up a little while after, alive and well.. a bit sore nonetheless. I moved to lean on my knees in front of her as she looked away from me, but I wouldn't allow her to.

It was rare for Arabella to show any emotion other than anger or lust, so when she gives me a look on this side of her, I know she trusts me as much as I do, even if she doesn't fill me in on everything she plans. I don't blame her for that, however I was allowed to be pissed off about it.

I grabbed her face with my hands, giving her no way out to turn away, even though she tried. "Look. at. me." I said sternly, a voice I only used for when I had to be in charge, like before. I clenched my jaw, just knowing she was trying to fight it, but she slowly looked at me with those gorgeous blue eyes I fell in love with. "That was not your fault in any way, do you understand me?"
