Y/N pov
It's been five grueling days since we arrived here.
Five days of relentless work, caring for everyone in our group, and pushing ourselves to the absolute limit during training. My body has never endured such strain before, resulting in scrapes, bruises, and tiny injuries scattered all over me. I've become quite adept at tending to them myself. One moment, I had a branch slashing my face, the next, I tripped over a root, and soon after, Nigel stumbled over me. The list of mishaps seems endless, and in just three days, I lost count of how many times I found myself face-first on the ground.
Regret gnaws at me for never playing tag with the kids back in the orphanage. Perhaps then, I would have built up some stamina without this overwhelming pressure.
What have I been doing all this time? My mind received training, but I neglected my physical abilities, and now I'm paying the price. I realize I must improve my physical prowess; otherwise, it might become my death sentence. Doesn't that sound wonderful?
Thankfully, the intensity of the training has been easing up lately, giving our battered bodies some much-needed reprieve. However, this respite only adds to my restlessness, as we know the hunt is imminent. It could happen any day now.
We all feel the tension mounting, especially Nigel, who seems to be on edge and shaking almost all the time. The anticipation and uncertainty are taking their toll on each of us.
I once made the mistake of asking Nigel about his troubling subject, and oh my god, it was a never-ending ramble of nonsensical gibberish that had nothing to do with my actual question. I had to cut him off and swiftly change the subject, which seemed to bring him some relief.
Since then, we've all agreed to give him space on that particular topic. We take turns keeping him distracted, so he doesn't have to dwell on it constantly. It's Sonya and Pepe's turn now, as I noticed them doing their part while passing by.
Back in our house, Oliver and I find ourselves lying on our beds in comfortable silence. It has become our daily routine, unwinding after the demanding training sessions, and then going our separate ways.
On the way back, Oliver and I engage in light conversation about mundane things, and as we settle into our beds, silence envelops us. Some days, we talk a bit more, while on others, we simply say our goodnights and drift off to sleep.
The sunlight that once streamed through the window starts to wane, and I watch as the room slowly succumbs to darkness. The objects in the room gradually disappear, swallowed up by the night. And in this dimness, Oliver and I find solace, as we lie there together in peaceful quietude.
In the pitch-black darkness, I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face.
"Y/N?" came a tired and weary voice. I responded with a soft hum.
I could hear the rustling of sheets and the sound of footsteps approaching. Confused, I slowly opened my eyes, but the dimness offered no clarity.
Then, an unidentified noise, followed by a sharp pain. "A warning! Give me a warning first, damn it," I grumbled with slight annoyance, trying to adjust to the sudden brightness of a lit candle.
"Sorry," he sheepishly grinned.
Concern took hold of me as I examined his appearance in the candlelight. He looked terrible, far worse than usual. His hair was in a tangled mess atop his head, dark circles hauntingly present under his eyes, and his pale skin seemed impossibly white, accentuated by the unflattering shadows cast by the candlelight. He appeared even more ailing than before.
