Oliver POV
These past few days have been... confusing, to say the least.
Y/N seems to have effortlessly won over everyone outside of our team, and the majority of the children adore them. They carry an aura of kindness, perpetually sporting a gentle smile that makes most of the newcomers feel at ease in their presence.
But there's trouble too. That persistent blond-haired girl, no matter what we do or say, twists everything around, painting us as villains or liars. Her denial of the grim reality we face puts her in danger, and I fear she won't survive the next hunt if she doesn't start listening to reason soon.
Speaking of which, the next hunt is scheduled to begin later today. I contemplate keeping an eye on the girl, but then I wonder if that would be a mistake. She's already trying to turn the children against us, and that's the last thing we need.
Lucas, the one in charge, won't let us leave the mill until an hour into the hunt, which is frustrating. By then, the whole ordeal could be over.
"Come on, let's grab some breakfast," Y/N says cheerfully, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah, sure," I reply.
As we head to get our breakfast, the usual routine unfolds. Children greet Y/N with enthusiasm, and they smile warmly in return. I, on the other hand, get largely ignored.
But Y/N notices my mood and gives me the brightest smile I've ever seen, taking my hand in a comforting gesture.
How do they always know what I'm feeling? I wonder, but then I decide it doesn't matter. Their physical touch means a lot to me, and that's all that truly matters.
"After breakfast, we'll head to Lucas, right?" Y/N asks, and I nod in confirmation.
"Are you still angry about his decision?" they inquire further, prompting me to consider nodding or acting like a stubborn child. But words aren't necessary; Y/N already knows my answer.
Then, trouble arrives. The blond-haired girl, along with a smaller blond girl wearing a pink wool-made beanie hat, walk in. The taller blond approaches Paula and Pepe, the ones distributing food today, and throws another tantrum.
"Can't you see?! They even control the food! If you don't obey them, they'll starve you to death without hesitation!" she exclaims dramatically.
Y/N looks up from their food, a frown on their face. "This again?" they mutter to me.
"Yep, never gets old," I reply with a sigh, and Y/N lets out a deep breath.
"Take the food or don't. Some people just want to eat in peace," Paula says calmly, still holding a bowl of soup for the girl to take.
"How dare you...!" the blond starts again, but the girl with the beanie quickly grabs her hand, trying to calm her down. "Whose side are you on?! What are you doing?!"
Just as I'm about to intervene, Y/N grabs my hand, shaking their head.
I raise an eyebrow, but Y/N whispers, "This is great entertainment. Let me enjoy this." I can't help but grin at their response and sit back down.
"But...!" the girl with the beanie attempts to explain herself but gets immediately cut off.
"What 'but'? You're trying to stab me in the back, aren't you?! Do you really believe them?! Do you trust those strangers more than your own sister?!"
"No...!" the girl with the beanie pleads again. "Please, just listen..."
"Listen to what?! That nonsense?! Fine then, hey demons, come and eat me if you're so strong!"
