Six months had gone by in what felt like six years ago. I never heard from Daniel - which was great. Josefina and Jocelyn are nine months old and going on to ten months. Mum was a tremendous help, along with Grace.
I was grateful that my life was finally getting some sense of serenity, at least. Christa had stopped by not to see me but to spend time with her god-daughters. Today, she decided we should go clubbing. I didn't want to, but she insisted, as hot-headed as she was, and mum agreed.
"Mum, why do I have to go out today?" I asked as I tried on my dress.
"Because you have been working too much, taking care of the kids, and not having time for yourself, not even a spa day!" She exclaimed.
My business was going well, but slowly. I needed investors - bad - companies I could cater to, send lunch to their staff, or even have a food truck or canteen on their premises. And the right contacts to get business booming, but I had too much on my mind, and yeah, I needed a break. I guess they were both right - I had to have some fun.
Christa walked in with her six-inch heels hitting the ground, dressed in a short black sequin gown. She shimmered as she swayed her hips.
"Thank goodness you are here. Lotanna hasn't found a thing to wear except for that gown she tried on," Mum told her and left us.
With a chuckle in her voice, she said, "Let me guess, you have not found a dress to wear because you do not want men looking at you like you don't know how to dress?"
I heaved out a sigh. "Kinda. You know me so well, don't you?"
She nodded. "Who does that, though? After all that men have done to you, you still care about what they think?"
A tiny smile crept up on my face. "Do you know if I will find the one at the club?"
She shook her head in disbelief. "Who finds the one at the club? I don't understand you, honestly. First, Davis dumped you, leaving you pregnant. Then you fell for Daniel, who was ready to use you fraudulently and even added domestic abuse to his resume. Can't you see the handwriting on the wall? You are not ready for a relationship, Lotanna."
I walked up to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. "I refuse to believe that I am cursed. Positive vibes."
"I am not saying you are cursed, and I am just saying you should take a break from this love thing."
I let go of her. "They say the third time is the charm. What kind of party are we going to that requires me to dress like this?" I asked skeptically, looking at the mirror.
Amused, she smiled at me, winking for emphasis. "Don't be so holy now. Stop worrying. You look fantastic." She grinned sweetly. I watched her as she put on the finishing touches of her makeup and fluffed her weave until they were perfect.
The dress Christa made me wear was beautiful and worked perfectly with the weather, since it was a warm night. The black leather dress fit snugly over my slight curves but had somewhat of an itchy feeling that was kind of annoying.
Luckily, I knew I would get used to it. Christa came behind me, placed a thick gold belt across my midsection, and fastened it in the back. Groaning at her persistence, I knew it was no use arguing with her because we had already bantered for an hour while she did my hair and makeup. When she gets into one of her determined, creative swings, there is nothing anyone can do to stop her. I knew I looked beautiful, and I wish I had someone in my life to at least share my heart with.
"Lotanna Lewis!" she yelled.
Jerking to attention, I looked at her wide-eyed and snapped, "Why are you yelling at me? I am standing right here!"
