“hey you guys, I think I'm going to stay in today.” I tell them, looking out the window.
“you sure?” Dakota asks, walking up next to me.
I nod and take a sip of my coffee. “I have the designs to do and it would just be nice to be by myself some.”
“if you say so. We'll drop Katie off with Nick before doing tourist things. Keep your phone on.”
I smile and nod, “have fun.” I tell them as they leave. I look back out over the town and realize it was only six years ago I was standing right here in this exact same spot.
Adam comes up and stands next to me, staying silent. We both take a sip of our coffee simultaneously.
“now that you've spent two nights here, want to stop wasting your money at the hotel?” he asks, not looking at me. Or at least I don't think he's looking at me, but I'm still looking out the window, so I wouldn't know.
“you serious?”
he shrugs, “might as well have a roommate for a couple of months. Not to mention the fact that you can cook...”
I laugh and turn to face him, “I can bake. Cooking takes a whole other skill level.”
“so?” he cocks an eyebrow.
“why the hell not?”
“we'll grab your stuff after breakfast.”
I nod and look back over the town.
I grab my guitar from the guest room and sit down on the sofa with a notebook in hand. It had been awhile since I wrote my own stuff, but I was determined to pull a Taylor Swift and write about the guy I loved, love, and will love.
Broken promises
you start to wonder 'what if?'
would you still love me?
hold me high above the sky
baby don't let me fly
and you don't let me fly
Before you say I do
remember back to me and you
let's rewind and tell the truth
I'm still in love with you
think that over
before you say I do
our first encounter
wasn't the best
I was drunk off my ass
you were my knight in shining armor
saving my life
and letting me throw up on the grass
Before you say I do
remember back to me and you
let's rewind and tell the truth
I'm still in love with you
think that over
before you say I do
our first kiss was a big mistake
it was in paris, but you wouldn't remember it
we were walking, talking,
and that's when I tripped
falling for the last thing I wanted to be with
before you say I do
remember back to me and you
let's rewind and tell the truth
I'm still in love with you
think that over
before you say I do
Before you say I do
remember back to me and you
let's rewind and tell the truth
I love you
and never stopped
Remember us
before you say I do
Broken promises
but you don't seem to mind
it's not like it's your heart that's on the line
hold me high above the sky
baby don't let me fly
you let me fly
you let me fall broken promises...
I smile at how the song sounded and go back to the guest room to change into something more suitable for the day. As I slipped on a pair of jeans I hear the front door close. At this moment I should be scared out of my mind. I know I should. But at the same time I knew it was Adam, who else would it be?
He walks by the guest room door, talking on the phone.
“yes Katelyn, I'm still coming over. I just needed to stop by the apartment and grab something.” he walked into the master bedroom.
Dakota and Finn made it look like they weren't staying there in case something like this came up.
“I know mom told me she has people staying here, but until I see them I'm still coming here.” Katelyn must have said something else because the next thing I heard was Adam coming out of the room, “God! Where the hell is it?!” he sighs, “nothing. Look sis, I'll see you in about half an hour.” he doesn't say anything after that and for a second I thought he had left. Then I heard crashing around in the living. What was he looking for? I quickly push all of my stuff under the bed and crawl under myself just in case he thought to look in here.
The door to the bedroom opens and then does the closet door. I hear him mumble something and then both doors closed. I let out a deep breath and wait for the front door to close before I get out from under the bed.
That was a close call.
Curious now, as to what was in the closet, I open the sliding door and peek in. there was a shoebox on one of the top shelves and I reach up grabbing the box. There was nothing written on the box so I wasn't quite sure what was inside.
Should I open it?
That's what I thought for the next half hour. I sat on my bed holding the box in my hands, staring down at it.
What could be inside?
A bomb?
I doubt it, Adam wasn't exactly the 'let's blow this up' type.
Letters?
But from/to who...I mean, that is a possibility though.
Pictures?
Again of who? And why would he keep them closed up in a box? On top of that, why wouldn't the box be labeled? He's very organized like that.
The curiosity got the best of me and I flipped the lid off, keeping my eyes shut.
Should I look?
That's what I spent the next five minutes wondering. The now topless box was sitting on my lap and I had my eyes squeezed closed.
Okay, I'm going to look.
I pick out of one eye and notice a bunch of papers. I open both eyes fully and become quite shocked at what I see.
It was a mix of everything I thought (well, except the bomb) and more. There were letters addressed to me and some addressed to Finn. Both of which were unsent. There were invitations to his wedding, also unsent. Underneath these were pictures of the two of us from both summers and then drawings that Katie had sent him when I first came to Maine.
This was the moment that made me make one of the biggest mistakes of my life.
