I was 13 when I found out I had bone cancer.
Shit okay, a bit too straightforward, how can I say this, my name is Xander Hale, I'm a 17-year-old boy from Minnesota; I've spent the past 5 years in and out of hospitals for my treatment. I honestly couldn't be arsed with this but... My mom.
Yeah, mom's gonna be sad... Shit, mom's gonna be sad! I don't want mom to be sad.
She's spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on me, I feel like such a burden. She still has hopes I'll be magically cured somehow! She's a die-hard Christian so you already know what I mean by that.
I lost hope the day I overheard them talking about how they're going to try their best and how it takes a miracle and yada yada yada...
I rolled my eyes before plopping back onto the stiff hospital bed. Ouch, that hurt. I flinched from the immense achy pain that's when I knew it was the onset of another ache attack or whatever you call it.
The pain in my leg ramped up from stiffness all the way to searing, blinding agony faster than I could blink.
Ah fuck fuck fuck
They were unbearable, they usually lasted for hours and days at times, god you have no idea how many restless nights I've dealt with because of how painful it was, my leg became so tender in the past couple of years which made it even worse.
I curled up in a ball and squeezed my eyelids shut. Even then, they managed to escape my eyes so I just gave up and broke down from the exhaustion of having to put up with that all the time.
Knock knock
Ah what does that annoying nurse want now
I rolled over and stared at the white door, "come in" I said through my choppy voice.
It was my doctor.
Surprised he remembers I exist.
I gave him my back and shut my eyes as if he would magically disappear or something. I wasn't in the mood to see anyone besides whatever news he had wasn't anything new.
"There's my favorite patient"
"You say that to everyone," I said followed by a scoff.
"Well I actually mean it to you"
I rolled my eyes before sitting up. He walked closer to me, sinister gaze never leaving my figure, he never failed to creep me out.
"I have some news for ya' kiddo"
"Am I getting moved again?" I said rolling my eyes, I mean it wouldn't be a shocker if that was what he came in here for.
He chuckled, "fortunately for you, that's not the case today. You'll be sharing this room with a new patient!"
My shoulders dropped as I narrowed my eyes and wrinkled my nose at the old man in front of me. He can't be serious right now.
"No."
I turned away from him and faced the wall once again. I heard him let out a breathy sigh before taking a couple of steps closer to me.
"He's a good kid, his parents came all the way from Canada to treat him. I'm sure you both will get along."
I drew my lips in tightly before I looked at him once again "No we won't 'get along' because there will be no talking or interacting. As long as he stays on his side of the room and doesn't disturb me we'll be good okay? Okay!"
It was after a few minutes of silence before he gently tapped my shoulders and headed out.
Great! Just great! Just when I thought this shit hole couldn't get any worse a Canadian boy decided to disturb my peace! Why couldn't he go to some other hospital, it's not like these good-for-nothing doctors are gonna help him get better anyway.
Hymph jokes on him, he's gonna suffer so badly here, next thing he knows he's gonna be kept here for years trying to get better only to turn out to be a disappointment and a waste of daddy's money because he'll never get better!
Woah, calm down Xander.
I snorted at that thought while fidgeting with my bedsheets and shutting my eyes...
It's probably not even that bad.
7:20 PM
The door let out an annoying creek that interrupted Xander's third nap that evening, he suffered from constant fatigue ever since he began chemo.
He forced his eyes open before hauling into a sitting position, those green eyes of his met the blinding lights of the hospital lights, not only that but he managed to see three figures coming his way.
Xander's POV.
This is it... Angels of death are coming for me. Ah, finally I can rest.
I allowed my heavy lids to shut preparing for whatever was coming, that was until I heard an annoying voice.
"It's time for your medication Xander"
Ah shit, is this hell? No no no no, take me back God I promise I'll be good! I was kidding about not believing in you! Take me back man, please!
My eyes fluttered open, well I'm not dead that's for sure.
As the nurse was preparing my medications, two people walked passed me and made their way to the bed beside mine.
My eyebrows crashed, it was a nurse and some other guy, she exited but left him here, he just sat there at the edge of the bed texting someone.
Is this who I'm supposed to live with.
Any further thoughts got interrupted by a pinch that came from my nurse as she had finished injecting me.
I hissed, Owh!?
She gave me an apologetic look before she left my room.
I darted my head towards that boy.
Neither of us spoke, we just sat there in silence, occasionally fleeting glances at each other perhaps debating whether to start a conversation or not.
He had dark long dark hair that hung over his furrowed, gloomy face, bloodshot dark eyes, that set appealingly within their sockets, and ale skin that gracefully complimented his nose and mouth.
He's hot.
What? Shut up Xander what are you saying? You haven't even seen his face! He's a proper emo freak...
"I'm Elliot"
I jumped a bit, startled by his voice before composing myself. "Jesus dude you scared me"
He laughed at my expression, "My bad man, you alright?"
I nodded, yes.
Just hoping he'd read the room and leave me alone.
"So, aren't you gonna tell me what your name is?"
I swallowed, questioning if I should answer or just air him on spot.
I just decided to point at my name tag.
"Alright, Xander's a cool name"
"Are you trying to start a conversation with me?"
"Uh, it's just the silence was quite awkward I couldn't stand it"
"Well, I can't stand the fact that I have to share this room with someone else, so if you don't mind! Leave me alone, thank you."
I said before groaning and turning around.
I need a nap.
