Elliot walked into the spacious cafeteria, still getting used to the place and all it had to offer.
"Damn is this supposed to be a hospital or a hotel?"
A soft chuckle traveled from behind him. "Well, we just want to make it as homey and welcoming as we can to our patients," cheered the doctor.
"Oh, hey Dr.Brown," greeted Elliot.
"Why don't you go ahead and make new friends with the other children here, they're very lovely," He offered with a warm smile.
Elliot's eyes wandered around the bustling cafeteria but no one seemed to fit into his standards. "Eh..."
"Ah, how about Monroe over there? He looks like he could use some company," he said nudging at a quiet boy who sat alone.
"Fuck no,"
"Language, boy"
"Sorry,"
"I was just wondering... Where's Xander?" He asked the doctor.
"Ah, so I see you guys have talked. The kid's with his mother outside, but don't worry I'll let him know you were searching for him," he tapped Elliot's shoulder and left.
"Guess I'm sitting with the weird kid now," he mumbled.
________
"Hey! Monroe, right?"
The boy looked at Elliot who invited himself and took a seat in front of him.
"Don't mind me, just trying to get to know everyone here. I'm Elliot," he explained while stretching his arm out for a handshake.
The boy just stared at Elliot's widened palms, then back at him.
"Well you're quite a chatterbox, Monroe," Elliot said satirically and pulled his arm back.
"It's Peter. Peter Monroe,"
"Shit, so you do speak. Sweet, what brings you here?"
Peter hesitated before speaking, "Brain surgery."
Elliot's smile dropped instantly after hearing those words, "Damn, I'm sorry... Hey, uh good luck though man." He said trying to force an encouraging smile.
"Thanks, Elliot," Peter thanked and smiled back.
They stared at each other for a while before Elliot's eyes traveled behind Peter, and settled on a glass door that lead to a garden.
"Xander," he whispered when he saw a woman standing against a younger boy who sat in a wheelchair.
"It was nice knowing ya' and all but I gotta run, see you around later!" He said before darting towards the garden.
________
Xander's POV
"Yeah mom I know, I know... Why do you have to make such a big deal about it?" I asked agitated.
"Xandie, your 18th is such a big deal to me, Nonna, and your aunties back home. Our boy has been battling for so long now we must celebrate you." She said softly.
I pursed my lips and traced my eyes around our intertwined fingers before speaking again.
"And Dad?"
I looked up to meet her eyes feeling layers of unsettling emotions overcoming me.
"Xandie-"
"Xander, hey!"
End of POV.
Elliot said jogging towards the curly-haired boy and his mother.
"Oh, I'm sorry if I interrupted something."
