Not so bad

The bright light that snuck through the blinds woke Elliot up, his eyes fluttered, slowly opening them to meet the not-so-high ceiling of the room.

6:30 am, the clock read. He pushed himself up to a sitting position, back against the bed. He rubbed his eyes before they wandered around the eerie room.

On his left, he noticed how the bed that sat there was empty. The blankets were ruffled on top of the messy white bed sheets, and the pillow was still flat and loose in the middle, probably due to the compression of the boy's head to it.

He hasn't been gone for too long

Where is the boy? Elliot thought to himself.

Just then the nurse walked into the room, both handles of a wheelchair in her hands as she pushed it towards the bed. In the wheelchair, sat the boy.

Elliot's POV.

My eyes met two other pairs, green ones to be precise. The freckled boy sat there, we stared at each other for a split second before he was put on his bed again.

The nurse smiled at me, "Breakfast won't be too long boys," then left and shut the door behind her, so my eyes traced back to the boy.

"You can stop staring now," he said abruptly before turning his head in my direction.

"Can you not walk or something?" I asked.

"Nah mate, I just enjoy wheelchairs"

"For real?"

"Of course not 'for real' idiot, I got cancer" he hissed with a pinched expression.

My jaw nearly fell to the ground and my eyebrows crossed.

"That's deep, I'm sorry"

I received an exaggerated sigh followed by an "Uh-hmm, fucked me up real bad."

I don't think he's the friendly type.
_________

The nurse walked in with a cart of what the boys assumed to be hospital food.

Elliot's eyes shone, while Xander had a rather warry look on his face, the tray was placed in front of them but Elliot was focused on Xander as to why he looked a bit hesitant.

Xander looked at the nurse in plea but all she did was give him a comforting pat.

He struggled with anorexia to be straightforward with it.

Food caused an irrational wave of fear in him, he lost appetite, and telling him to just get over it was going to do no good since it developed with cancer.

And Elliot seemed to have picked up the signals quickly.

"You aren't hungry?"

"Yes, no, it's none of your business."

"C'mon, it's not that deep."

He shot him a glare. "Didn't say it was, I'm just not in the mood. Chewing is too much work anyway and I genuinely cannot be bothered."

Elliot chuckled before taking tentative steps towards Xander's bed and taking a seat at the edge.

The younger boy jolted

"Woah there! Just what the hell are you doing?" He yelped as he pulled his tray away.

"Sitting?"

"Oh so you got jokes, I can clearly see that. You're invading my space." He said with a bit of sass in his tone.

In a rather nonchalant response, Elliot casually plopped on Xander's bed.

"Your bed is stiff how do you sleep in this thing?"

Xander hesitated for a bit, but then decided to allow it and calmly put his tray back down.

"Got used to it, now stop changing the topic, why are you here?"

"Donno," he said throwing a grape and catching it just in between his teeth. He looked at Xander and wiggled his eyebrows.

Xander curled his lip and gently grabbed a slice of his sandwich, his expression softened when he took a look at it- "PB and j," he said disappointed.

"Welp, no breakfast for me"

"Yo what? PB and J is crazy good"

"Then you have it!" He responded harshly.

Elliot sat up and examined the boy's face before offering him his sandwich.

"You can have mine, I think they forgot to add anything in it"

"You're gonna offer me your... Sandwich? Well, bread?"

"I mean yeah you can't just starve, here I'll help you with that."

Elliot grabbed a plastic spoon and removed some of Xander's fear foods

"Removing everything completely wouldn't do you no good so I'll eat some with you. I had an eating disorder back when I was 15 and my friend used to do this with me."

Xander's face relaxed in awe, just what did he think he was doing.

"Ok ok, thanks. I guess. But I'm not your friend."

Elliot's lips curved a bit at its corners.

"Not yet" wink*

Xander visibly cringed, "Not if you keep acting like that," he said earning a satisfying laugh from Elliot that kinda made him feel a little nice inside.

"Alright, bet"

Xander's green eyes twinkled as they both ate together, he couldn't hide it for sure, it made him feel a little bit euphoric inside.

Maybe starting a little conversation wouldn't hurt.

"Sign?" Xander asked.

Elliot stopped chewing, and stared at the boy through his eyelashes and said "Uh... I, I don't know... I haven't taken ASL classes or anything."

Xander blankly stared at him unable to believe what he had heard.

"What?"

"This dumbass... Your star sign?"

Elliot did nothing but stare in confusion.

"Astrological sign?" The two boys were just basically having a staring contest at that point.

Sigh...

"Hey, I'm trying!"

"Your zodiac sign."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"Shit, Leo"

"Gross."

"What why?" Elliot asked narrowing his eyes, "Yours couldn't be any better, what's yours?"

"Leo"

"Bro that's the same thing"

"I know but It's different"

"Whatever you say, kid, I won't make an argument out of it''
