Lupin guided Ruby to the secluded beach that wasn't too far off from Hutchison House. Being flanked by private properties, it almost entirely assured that they would have this beach to themselves.
Ruby released Lupin's hand and kicked off her shoes, running barefoot through the sand to the water's edge. Laughing with delight, she hiked up her dress and put her feet in the water, watching as the foam rose up to caress her toes only to fall back again.
Lupin smiled as he stood with his hands in his pockets, just watching her. In that moment, he honestly wouldn't be surprised if she dove into the water and turned into a mermaid. A childish part of him feared she might, and so he took a step towards her, only to stop when she turned to him and held out her hand.
"Hey, give me your belt."
"Oh? My belt? Whattaya want this for?" Lupin placed his hands on his belt tilting his head curiously. Granted, there was a part of him that would willingly give her his belt, his pants, and every other article of clothing, if she but asked for them.
His more perverse thoughts, though unspoken, were evident enough in his tone, for Ruby rolled her eyes as she trotted back to him. "C'mon," she said, her hands moving to his belt and tugging him boldly towards her. "I wouldn't ask without good reason." Deftly, her fingers were already working at the buckle.
"Hey now, watch those fingers. You might accidentally undo something else while you're at it."
"Ha! You wish," was Ruby's playful retort. "Damn, dude, your pants are tight. You don't even need this belt. This is just to go with the rest of your old-fashioned aesthetic, isn't it?"
"Jeez. You make me sound like some kinda relic. Maybe Indiana Jones should just go ahead and put me in a museum now, huh?"
"You'd be the main attraction, I'm sure," she teased.
In spite of him, or perhaps because curiosity made him allow it, in no time at all, Ruby had taken his belt, giving it a tug so that he twirled a bit until it was in her hand. She held it up, looking at it. Then she looked at his waist, then back at the belt.
"Jeez. How do you have such a slender waist for a dude? It's almost not fair."
"I gotta keep slim and spry to make all those fantastic get-aways, ya know?" Lupin watched as Ruby hiked up her dress and donned his belt, fastening it around her own waist and letting the material of her dress blouse up and over it.
Now her intentions were clear. She wanted a means of hiking her dress higher so that she could enjoy the water without ruining the dress. "It's far too pretty to get wet and sandy," she told him.
As she unfurled her braid, her hair caught the wind and the setting sun, like a blazing inferno. For a moment, Lupin was captivated. But then, her hair was bound up once more, this time in a ponytail.
"Functionality," she told him simply. Then, grinning at him again, she turned and ran for the water, now looking as much a water sprite as she had earlier looked a woodland nymph. She splashed through the water, kicking up foam into the reddening sky, laughing the whole time.
"Lupin! C'mon!"
Grinning Lupin kicked his shoes and socks off. Next, his pants were rolled up to his knees, and after a quick glance to ensure their privacy, he removed his jacket, the red scarf, and the shaggy head of hair, which he deposited in a small pile on the sand.
