Katherine

"Baby, please call me. I'll never do that again, I promise. I'm so fucking sorry, I-"

"Wow," Jennifer snorts, emerging from her bedroom-cell phone in her grasp. I turn my head at the sound of her voice. "Are you two fighting?"

"Nah," I say, waving off her question. "Jesse's just being dramatic. I hired an assistant, and he's jealous." I take in her appearance-somewhat shocked at the first time I'd ever seen her in a dress. "Woah."

"What?" Jen asks worriedly, glancing down at her outfit-trying to smooth out the fabric. "Do I look bad? Is it the dress? I Knew I should've worn the-"

"No, no," I cut her short, shaking my head at her. "It's just the first time I've seen you in a dress. You look beautiful." And I meant that.

"I have a date tonight," She grumbles, her cheeks turning a brighter shade. "Kare planned something special, so..."

"Well, you look nice," I beam, my eyes flickering down to the shared texts between Jesse and me. Oh, sweet, sweet revenge.

"What about this new assistant?" She sinks into the cushion beside me. "Is he hot?"

My nose scrunched at her ask, hastily shaking my head. "No, not at all. I mean, he's cute? Like little brother cute, and he's barely nineteen." I shake my head again. "Benjamin needed a job, and I wasn't about to kick him out of my office."

"Does Jesse know that?"

"No, but making him feel stupid is way more fun," I quip, smiling mischievously at my best friend. "Wouldn't you say? Besides, that's not all he did, but I don't want to get into that right now." I switch off my phone, setting it face down on the arm of the sofa before looking back at Jen. "I want to talk to you about my birth-"

"Oh, look at the time!" Jennifer exclaims, cutting me off as she pushes off the sofa. "I don't wanna be late for my date." Her footsteps are hasty-heels clicking rhythmically on the floor, her hand reaching for the doorknob.

"Jennifer, please!" I beg, clasping my hands together, and her hand pauses. "You're my best friend, and we've never kept secrets from each other. We always told each other everything."

Her hand retracts from the knob, a heavy sighing escaping her mouth. Jennifer's eyes meet mine, defeat settling onto her features. Once I pout my lips, she cracks. "Ughh, okay!" She exclaims, tossing her hands in frustration. "I'll tell you, but don't ever make that face again, and you can't know this."

"Fine," I nod, giddily smiling. "I'll pretend not to know."

"He's taking you to-"

A loud honk outside our apartment pulls us from the topic of conversation. Jen steps off to the side, taking a peek from behind the living room curtains to see who it was. "It's Karen," She sighs, almost relieved. "I gotta go, Kat."

"Wait, come on!" I plead as she unlocks the front door, swinging it open to reveal a dolled-up Karen bouncing up the steps-a bouquet of carnations in her hand.

"I don't understand why you wanna know so bad," Jennifer says, setting her attention on her girlfriend-greeting her with a smile and chaste kiss on her cheek. "Hey, babe."

"Hi, Kat!" Karen waves, flashing me a smile. "Any plans tonight?"

"Oh yeah!" I chime, nodding my head in agreement. "Big plans."

"Like what?"

"I've got a date with the sofa and my favorite show." I joke, making Karen laugh.

"She's too much, huh?" Karen giggles, sharing a look with Jen.
