Katherine

I barely heard the maddening chime of my morning alarm. My entire body erupts with shivers—the gentlest graze on my cheek.

"Mornin', baby," Jesse murmurs, and the warmth of his breath fans my jaw before his lips press against the hollow of my cheek. "Happy Birthday."

The sound stops suddenly, my lips pulling into a smile. It was early morning, from what I could tell. The absence of sunlight was a clear indication of that. I hum appreciatively and turn my body towards him.

"What time is it?" I say in between a yawn, my eyes fluttering open to meet his. Jesse doesn't answer me right away. His hand reaches for my face, a small smile pulling the corner of his mouth as he stares at me. It felt more intimate than all the other times we were.

"What are you staring—"

"I love you," He says softly, cutting my question short. "So much, I... every time I'm with you, my heart beats so hard I can't breathe."

My cheeks immediately heat up, and my heart tightens in my chest. I felt the same way, and then some. "I love you..."

"Move in with me." Jesse interrupts me once again.

"What?" Now I was completely awake, not giving a single fuck about how tired I was. "You...what?"

"I'm sorry," He jerks his head back, wincing in the process. "Was that way too forward?" Jesse laughs humorlessly, rolling his body away from mine—eyes glued to the ceiling. "My timing couldn't be worse, huh?"

"No, no," I deter, scooching over next to him. "It wasn't forward," I reassure him, reaching for his face to get him to meet my eyes. "I wasn't expecting it, that's all."

"You don't have to agree to anything right now, or today for that matter." Jesse turns his neck to look at me and sets his hand on top of mine. His brows deepen in thought—the pad of his thumb brushing along my knuckles. "As badly as I want to wake up to your face every morning—I want you to move in with me because you want to, not because I want you to."

"Do you?" I muse.

"Do I...what?"

"Do you want me to move in with you?" I ask, gripping the blanket as I sit up—staring down at his face.

Jesse takes a moment to answer before he sits up and takes my face in his warm palms. "I want that more than I want air to breathe." His eyes search mine, fingers diving into my hair to hold the back of my head.

"Okay," I say softly, nodding my head to assure myself.

"Okay...?" Jesse drops his hands, visibly puzzled. "What does that mean?"

"It means," I drag out, settling my knees on either side of his lap. His arms instantly wrap around me, his hands caressing my bare thighs. "I'll move in with you."

The whites of Jesse's eyes brighten, his lips stretching into the biggest smile I'd ever seen. "Really?"

"Yeah," I whisper, my eyes focused on his lips as I lean close—touching my forehead with his. "Really."

Jesse closes the space between our lips, taking the breath that I inhaled. His tongue finds my own, hands surging my backside. Goosebumps rise unto the surface of my skin, my heart beating against his chest.

I moan into his mouth, bringing my arms around his neck before I get on my knees to kiss him at a better angle.

"Sweetheart?" Jesse hums, trying to break away from my mouth. "We seriously have to get going."

"Oh, come on," I whine, gently scraping my nails through his soft black hair. "It'll be fast."

"Fast?" Jesse scoffs. "With you?" He almost chuckles, shaking his head at me. "With you, I need to take my time."

My shoulders drop in disappointment, my lips forming into a pout.

"Chin up, baby," He grabs my chin, guiding my lips in proximity to his. "I promise it'll be worth the wait."

I don't get to say much as Jesse climbs off my bed—the gleam of hope in his eyes clouding my judgment. I lived for the hope of it all. I watch his back as he starts for my bedroom door, and his fingers wrap around the knob.

"Jesse?"

He looks over his shoulder, meeting my gaze.

I knew that it was mindless of me to agree with his proposal on the spot. That was my problem. I acted without thinking of the consequences. Kill first, and ask questions later. That was my M.O, and Jesse deserved an honest answer. But, that was another conversation for a later time.

"I have time to take a shower, right?"

Jesse's eyes crinkle as he smiles, softly chuckling at my question. "Of course," He answers humorously. "Our flight isn't until eight. Go shower. I've got an errand to run before we hit the road."

I nod—Jesse stepping closer to lean down, pressing his lips against my forehead.

"I'll see you in a bit, okay?" With that, he turns on his heel and steps out of my room, closing the door behind him.

I feel my shoulders drop, the littlest smile on my lips starting to fade. I wanted to move in with Jesse. More than I've wanted anything in my life. But, fear of failure was creeping alongside me. What if Jesse and I weren't working out? Sure, we were fine now. Though, that didn't mean our relationship couldn't go south.

Jacob and I talked about moving in with each other after high school. It was a constant conversation between us. Knowing what I do now, it was terrifying to try that step with someone new. I loved Jesse with all my heart, and I couldn't let a little thing like fear get in the way of a milestone between us.

I swing my legs off the bed, rising to my feet as I start for the shower.
