It was 2:30 in the morning when I checked my phone, the small light in the dining room illuminating my workspace. I run my fingers through my hair, brushing back as I took another drink from my second cup of coffee.
I was swamped, from legal binds and bylaws to operating agreements and MOUs. I wasn't even halfway through the homework. I closed the file once I finished the last box and I stacked it atop the 'done' pile. I take a breath, straightening out my back and I fish out another manila folder.

"Hey..."
My shoulder shook, my head stirring as I fell back into sleep and before I knew it, a loud sound rattled my head, making me bolt upright. "What?! I'm up, I'm up!" I squint, my eyes adjusting to the view of a concerned roommate. "For fuck's sake, Jen." I groan, stretching out my arms above my head. "What was that?"
Jen shook her head, placing two frying pans onto the stove. "Did you stay here all night?" She looked at me incredulously.
"I had to get it done, what time is it?" I yawned, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
"It's still early, I just wanted to wake you up on time. So... I suggest you get ready now, that way you get to work on time."
I sigh in relief, nodding my head as I pushed out and stood up, stretching my back now. "Thanks, and hey, at least I got everything done," I mutter, glancing at the pile of folders.
"That's true. I can't believe you were here all night." Jen whispered to herself, shaking her head at me. "Now, go get dressed."
I nod and saunter into my bedroom. Walking to my closet, I begin laying out my outfit. Jen had got me a back pantsuit a while back and I decided to pair that with a beige camisole and a pair of nude pumps. I toss them onto my bed and hop in the shower for a quick one.
After I was done, I step out of the steaming shower and wrap a towel around myself. I walk out of the bathroom and over to my drawers. I grab a bra and panty and quickly get changed. I had more than enough time to dilly-dally. I twist my hair and pin it to the back of my head with a claw hair clip. Once I finished with my hair, I moved on to my makeup.
I hardly wore it, besides mascara and gloss and maybe my eyebrows but today, I dabbed a bit of shimmer on my eyelids and I was ready to go.
I walk back into the kitchen, my heels clicking against the hardwood floors as I gathered the files, and place them back into the box. Clicking the lock shut, I swing my bag over my head and let the familiar weight settle on my hip. "Jen, I'm leaving!" I called out, grabbing my phone out from the charger, and checking the time before tucking it into the pocket of my bag.
"Have a good day at work!" Jennifer shouts as I grab the box and head out of the apartment.

I set the file box on top of his desk, pushing a cup of coffee toward him as well. "Morning," I greet, plastering on a fake smile.
Mr. Thomas grabbed the cup, standing up as well to look at me since the box was blocking his view. "Hmm," He hummed, his eyes flickering from the files to my face. "On time today, I see? Well, there's a first time for everything."
I scrunch up my nose, my mind playing pictures of me strangling him. Stay calm, I repeated like a mantra, I needed to stay calm. "The paperwork is all done, color-coded and organized," I said as he pushed the locks open, taking a folder out. "You can check it,"
"No need," He uttered, placing the folder back in its place. "I trust you," My brows rose in surprise and for a minute I felt good, that was the first compliment I'd ever gotten from him.
