The night was dark and gloomy. I laid awake, staring at the sky. Loud rumbling made its way into my ears, Little sparks of light was seen in the clouds.
It's too dangerous to stay here all night.
As if Thomas read my mind, he stirred from his not-so-peaceful sleep, waking everyone else up as well. But apparently, not for the same reason.
He pointed somewhere, mumbling something about lights.
Once I got a closer look, I understood. There was a sketchy looking building, lights and scrapped up walls.
BOOM. The sound of lightning stung my ears, but it ended as quickly as it started.
Thomas didn't waste any time, telling us to grab our bags and run. I ran at a slow speed, behind everyone else.
Watching over everything, making sure no one gets injured. Being in the front of the group would kill me. Not knowing if everyone was safe.
BOOM. The same sound of lightning struck, except this time; louder. closer.
"GO! FASTER!" I yelled over the thunder, fastening my pace as well.
The building got closer and closer, seeing it more clearly made me confused. It seemed so familiar, yet I'm sure I haven't been here before. Or at least up close.
I pushed the thought away, I need to focus.
Courses of small pains ran through my thighs with all the pressure I was putting on it while running.
BOOM. This one was the loudest, the closest. It stung my ears but instead of disappearing, it was replaced with a high frequency ringing in my ear.
I scanned my surroundings and the view in front of me was horrifying, a strike of lightning hit my friend directly; Minho.
Thomas was nearby, getting affected
by the strike as well. But not as bad as Minho. I rushed to help him, Aris doing the same.Once we got closer and closer to the entrance, Frypan's yelling could be heard clearly, some of it at least. All that I could make out over the noise was, "RUN" , "HURRY", "COME ON", "ALMOST THERE".
Thankfully, we made it.
"Lay him on the ground."
"His head, careful."
Voices were heard in the darkness of
the building, that I recognized as Aris' and Thomas'.With a click of a flashlight, Minho's face was now visible. He was out cold, no movement came from him other than the others trying to shake him awake.
I could feel that everyone was worried. Small sniffles and tears fell from some of their faces, others stone cold; refusing to accept what has happened.
The room fell silent. Just as everyone lost hope, Minho gasped awake, eyes wide.
"What happened?" He asked, clueless.
"You were struck by lightning, Minho."
Thomas explained."Oh."
I wanted to chuckle at his response but I was interrupted.
A faint screech. My head snapped in the direction, It sounded as if it came from the complete opposite side of the room.
My suspicions rose even higher as I finally had time to pay some attention to the pungent smell.
I knew that smell.
"Everyone, get behind me." I said in a low tone. I heard feet shuffling, they all seemed to have obliged as I could hear their breathing behind me.
"Switch off the flashlight, Thomas. Trust me."
The faint light disappeared without any questions asked.
"What is it, Sarah?" Thomas whispered.
"Shhh, just wait."
I took Thomas' flashlight, aiming it at the pitch black room in front of us. I took a deep, cleansing breath.
Click.
I was right. A crank lunged in our direction, specifically at me.
Nothing left my mouth, in hopes that
this would be the only crank awake.
That we wouldn't wake any other ones up, if there were any. But everyone
else screamed in horror.Clutching the gun in my pocket, I mentally counted down, not pulling it out until absolutely necessary.
I came close to taking my gun out but then something shiny reflecting the light of the flashlight.
Metal chains. On the crank. I sighed, glad I didn't have to kill the crank.
I may have killed hundreds or maybe thousands of cranks, but never satisfied in doing so. It was plainly for survival.
I do enjoy using my skills. Maybe I would've enjoyed it if they were evil. But they're innocent people who got infected by a stupid virus.
The crank couldn't reach me, his momentum was cut off by the chain that was wrapped tightly around his ankle.
A hand gripped my wrist and pulled me back protectively, making I crashed into a body. Probably Aris.
No. It was Newt.
His hand was still on my wrist, His other arm snaked around my waist. I looked up at him, seeing his unclear silhouette in the darkness.
I could feel his hot breath on me, it sent shivers down my spine. The air was tense but I bet nobody felt it except us.
He slowly leaned down next to my ear and whispered words that I never thought I'd want to hear.
"You should really be more careful, love."
