Betty is shocked when Jughead randomly breaks up with her a few weeks after she had moved to the south-side, living in her mother's trailer whilst she was in prison for the coverup of Jason Blossom's murder. They had been a little distant recently; Jughead wasn't a fan of her hanging around the Serpents more, and they didn't get enough time to see each other. She assumed it was because of them, and a few days of wallowing she went over to Jughead's to try and explain to herself.
But what she didn't know was that her seemingly innocent ex-boyfriend had been getting calls from the Black Hood, and had been told to break up with her or else there would be consequences. When Betty goes over to his house to talk he gets a call, and in a moment of frustration, assuming it was another girl, Betty snatches the phone and answers it before he can, and realises that he's getting calls from a serial killer.
