A week before prom, Betty was broken up with by her boyfriend. (Her boyfriend who she had been dating to get over her crush on her best friend, but her boyfriend nonetheless). Like anybody would be in her situation, she was miserable. She tried to distract herself by sleeping over at Veronica's, or throwing herself into her schoolwork, but none of it worked. With prom on the horizon and with nobody to go with anymore, she accepted the fact that she just would miss the event to drown in self pity.
Jughead had been watching her the whole week with a concerned frown; his best friend since childhood had been dumped by some douche bag right before prom, and he couldn't do anything. It had been Veronica's idea to take her to prom himself, as she knew of his feelings for her, and he decided it would be a good way to cheer Betty up. He told Veronica to make sure that she was ready on the evening of prom, and he would be at her door to surprise her as her honorary date. Despite the fact that he was hopelessly in love with her, and didn't know that she had a crush on him too.
