Akaashi laid on the grass, his hand intertwined with Bokuto's.
"Did you see how awesome I was today?"
Smiling, Akaashi rolled over to face his guard. "I did. You were amazing as always." It was true. He had looked incredible in his practice duel against the other guards.
Bokuto grinned, and Akaashi's heart melted at the sight. The two hadn't discussed that night beyond an apology from a very nervous Bokuto. Of course, the apology was unnecessary. And though they didn't say anything, Bokuto would often pull Akaashi into random hugs- more often than usual- and grab his hand. Akaashi would lay his head on Bokuto or kiss his cheek.
"You know," Bokuto started. He seemed hesitant. "I could teach you."
Akaashi raised a brow. "To use a sword? I already know how."
"You know how to block, and a few basic attacks. Enough to fight against a few people. But when fighting in a battle? You don't know nearly enough."
"You think my father will send me to fight."
Bokuto sighed. "Yes. Not for awhile. I mean, the fighting hasn't even started yet. But..." He ran a hand through his hair, lost in thought.
"But when the time does come, you won't be able to protect me on the battlefield," Akaashi finished.
"Yeah."
Akaashi propped himself onto his elbows. "Alright then. My esteemed guard, please teach me how to properly fight."
"It would be my pleasure."
~
Akaashi couldn't help his laughter as Bokuto slammed his head against the wall. He really is a sore loser.
"How did I make such a rookie mistake?!"
"Hey give me some credit. I've been practicing for two months."
Bokuto continued pouting.
"And, I have been learned from the best."
A smile spread across Bokuto's face. "The best, huh?"
"The best."
Bokuto turned around to fully face Akaashi, grinning from ear to ear. "I guess I am the best!"
Akaashi glanced at the swords laying on the floor in front of him. "Bokuto, the fighting started yesterday."
"It did." The guard's smile faltered. "It was just a small skirmish though. Nothing that would require the prince to be there yet."
"Yet."
Bokuto raised a brow. "Exactly. Yet." He stepped closer to Akaashi and put a hand under his chin. "So don't worry about it for today. When the time comes, you'll be ready." He pressed a quick kiss to Akaashi's head.
The prince smiled. "Since when are you the one good at cheering people up?"
~
Akaashi woke up to a hand over his mouth.
Bokuto stood over him, blood dripping down his face. "We have to go. Now."
