"Is that Michael Afton?" Mr. Pastor said cheerfully, opening the door. Michael was dropping me off at Tyler's place. We and Mai were going to be working on our math project together.
"Hi, Percy," he greeted, "I'm just dropping off Gregory."
"No, no, come in, sit with us," Mr. Pastor insisted. "Ryu is here, too."
I nudged Michael, trying to subtly push him into the residence. He needed to make friends, and this was a great opportunity to get closer to Tyler's dads and Mai's mom.
"Oh, uhm, okay," Michael finally agreed, and he walked in hesitantly.
"Tyler and Mai are upstairs," Mr. Pastor told me.
"Okay, thanks," I said, though I kind of assumed they were upstairs anyway. If they weren't here to open the door, then they were most likely in Tyler's room. I rushed up the stairs and secretly watched Michael walk into the living room with Tyler's dad from over the balcony.
I moved down the hallway and opened Tyler's door. Tyler was sitting on his bed with one leg crossed on top of the other, his oversized guitar sitting on his lap. Mai was on his desk chair, presumably listening to him play before I entered. As great as it was seeing my friends, there was one thing in particular I was excited about when I walked in.
"Batman!" I shouted, and I ran towards him laying on the bed. I gave the cat a big hug without picking him up from his spot, and he pawed my face. Batman was Tyler's new cat. He was white with black fur that looked like a mask around his eyes and snout. His real name, and the name on his tag, was actually Phantom, but Tyler offhandedly commented he looked like he wore a batman mask and I've been calling him that ever since.
"Oh yeah, go to the cat first," Tyler said, pretending to be mad. I looked up from Batman's fur and saw my friends looking at me.
"Hi," I greeted.
"Hi," Mai said. I got up from lying on top of Batman and sat down properly on the bed beside Tyler, taking off my backpack.
"What were you two doing?" I asked.
"Just showing off," Tyler said honestly. He put his guitar over to the side.
"Is he any good?" I asked Mai.
"Could use some work," she teased, crossing her arms. Tyler scoffed, but he had a smile on his face.
"So, let's get started," I said, and I started rummaging through my backpack. Mai shut me up by shoving her phone in front of me.
"Forget the project, guess what I found?" she said. I glared at her, but I took her phone and looked at it. It was just open to the notes app with an address on it.
"Uh, what?" I asked.
"Remember Vanessa's Instagram?" she explained. I rolled my eyes, but I nodded. "Each one of her captions were edited. Even the ones from years ago."
"She could just be indecisive," I said.
"But, each one had an uppercase letter, and it spelled out this address!" she exclaimed. Her eyes were lighting up with excitement.
"It's a bit far," Tyler said honestly, "but if we take the train, it'll be about a half hour bike ride from there."
"No, no," I said, stopping them before they could even suggest it. "We are not biking down there!"
"Well, it's two against one," Mai said.
"What about Isaac and Jay?" I asked. Surely they wouldn't want to do something as stupid as this?
