NOTE: I'm so sorry for the long wait holy crap! I had originally planned for this to be finished before Christmas but that didn't happen, so here's an obligatory greeting for the things I've missed:
Happy holidays, happy New Years, and happy one year anniversary since I began writing this series!
I've put together some more doodles for this chapter too, as an apology. They're all at the end once again. Thanks for sticking with me!
This felt like when I had first woken up, and yet it was different. Josh was watching me from afar until his silhouette became unrecognizable. I had a goal in mind. The keycard at the ferris wheel.
I was fully expecting to meet Vanny there. I was trying to come up with some kind of plan of what to do when I met her. Could I push her into the lake? Oh God, I hoped she wouldn't push me into the lake! I didn't have my friends with me if I fell in. Could I somehow get Vanny stuck at the top of the ferris wheel? That would at least slow her down.
But the thought of her and her team scared me. If something happened to her, she would have backup. My backup was gone.
As I was walking, one of the dining locations was lit up. The sound of tin and metal smashing was coming from the inside. The writing on top stated it was Chica's Cupcake Factory. I thought for a minute that Mai and Chica were in there. I debated whether I should check what was going on, but... I knew where the keycard was, and if they were just going to keep separating us each time we got together, then I should get it as soon as possible, and then look for my friends. That was my plan, anyways. Mai could handle herself, surely.
I tried to keep my mind off of the restaurant and walked quicker. I counted my steps, the number of pillars I saw, the stars in the sky. Anything that kept my mind awake and off of my reluctance to save Mai. It wasn't that I was afraid. I wanted to get home and we needed that keycard, and if Vanny wanted to speak to me before we left, so be it. I was doing this for her , she'd understand, right? The faster Vanny got what she wanted, the faster my friends and I could go home, right?
While staring up at the sky, I noticed that there was a portion I couldn't see. When I moved my head, the blockage moved with me. I took a few moments to understand its shape, but after some squinting, I could see the circular shape of the ferris wheel. I sped up and looked around. None of the lights were that particularly bright, and it took a while to get accustomed to the light.
The lake was certainly a centerpiece of sorts, but I honestly couldn't tell if it was the center of the whole park or just of this section. There was a pier with a wide bridge in the middle of the lake with a tall fence, and deep, heavy fog arose from it. In the center of that bridge was the ferris wheel, held together by a giant block of cement. It was quite tall.
Coming across the bridge and using the fence, I couldn't help but feel nervous. The fog felt unnerving. It was like steam, mist, or gas was rising from beneath the bridge and crossing onto the pathway. As I approached the ferris wheel, the lights on it turned on, just like what happened with all the other attractions.
It wasn't the lights that scared me, though. It was what it let me see. A silhouette of a person, hiding behind the fog.
I held onto one of the pillars of the railing and twisted it, carefully lifting it out of its spot. Once I had it in my hands, I practiced swinging it a few times. My heartbeat was rapid and my breathing was erratic. I knew something bad was going to happen, and it just got worse the more I walked through this mist that I could barely see through.
The person ahead of me must've heard me. They slowly turned to me, and as the fog began to dissipate around their face, I held tighter onto my wooden stick and kept my guard up high.
