It was nearing the end of lunch, and we were making our rounds around the hallways and grabbing our things from our lockers. Unfortunately, our lockers aren't right next to each other like they are in the movies, and so we spend about ten minutes roaming the halls and taking turns switching out our things while we talk. It's nice, especially since it means we can leave the club early. The club's fine and all, but I'd rather spend my time with just my four friends.

When we turned the corner to see my locker, I was disappointed. Josh was there with his friends, Travis and Clay, writing something on my locker. They noticed us and snickered, sauntering down the hallway away from us. Every other locker was normal, except mine, which had smeared marks dribbled all over it. It said Rat King with crude illustrations of fat rats bowing to a moldy piece of cheese.

"Fucking Josh," Mai muttered. She and Jay ran up a little ahead to stare them down while Isaac placed his hand on my shoulder to comfort me. I didn't need it, I felt more annoyed than hurt.

"Hey! Pick on someone your own size!" Jay shouted at Josh from across the hall. I couldn't see Josh with Jay blocking my view, but I could take a couple guesses as to how he'd respond. I heard his friends laugh, at least.

"Jay, it's fine," I said. This wasn't the first time it's happened.

"It'll only get worse if you don't do anything," he argued.

"It'll get worse if you provoke him. Just ignore it," I said, and I went to my locker and began moving the dial.

"It is kind of... annoying," Tyler said. Of course it was annoying, I didn't disagree with that, but I could handle it.

"And if he's going to bully you, at least be creative!" Jay said, a little loud so that Josh could overhear. "How long has he been calling you Rat King?"

Since that video went viral, I thought. It wasn't nationwide, millions of views viral, but it was locally famous. I had someone recognize me in person and ask me if I was mentally well once.

I pulled out the bottle of cleanser and towel that I kept in my locker. It had been drawn on so much, it had dried sharpie swirls in circles that I could never get rid of. I spritzed the metal and smeared the drawings.

"You okay?" Tyler asked, leaning next to the locker beside mine.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I said.

I heard heavy footsteps down the hall. I didn't even have to look to know it was Josh and his friends. I had to guess Jay's words made him mad enough to return.

"Don't come any closer–" Jay warned, but he and Mai were pushed over to the side. Tyler retreated back while I stayed still. I didn't blame him for cowering away, it was scary how intimidating Josh was. He was much bigger than I was, and he didn't need to surround me with more people. Just his presence alone was enough to make me stuck in place.

Josh spun me around and shoved me against the lockers, keeping his grip on my shoulder and shirt. His face had a mean smirk, and I could see Jay and Mai being held back by Travis and Clay. They knew who would be the most likely to fight back. I never blamed Isaac and Tyler for being too afraid, because oftentimes, I was too.

"You erased my drawings," Josh said, faking a sad voice and receiving some chuckles from his friends.

"Yeah, well," I said, "you're not much of an artist."

He did not like that. He forcefully pulled me closer and then thrusted me back into the locker in a quick second, and that energy made the back of my head hit the metal. He lifted me up from the ground, making it difficult for me to attempt to escape, and my feet dangled just above the floor.
