SCARLET shook, her fingers splayed on the ground. She was on her hands and knees, she knew she was. She could feel the cold cobblestone beneath her, her crimson hair falling in frizzy waves, draping over her face. Her breath wavered as she pushed her thick locks of hair out of her face and gingerly sat up. She embraced herself.
Who was she searching for? She had been waiting for someone.
My alpha-wolf.
She shut her eyes. Green irises flashed across her eyelids. Messy hair all unkempt over his head. His skin tanned a deep brown. Goosebumps crawled up her arms.
It could grow on me.
She was looking for someone, someone. Was he looking for someone?
Howling to the moon at night, he was a predator. Scarlet's face contorted at the image of him, his blood, another's blood. It mortified her.
But another, his soft green eyes. His hands on her waist and his lips on her lips-
Was this right?
She didn't even know his name.
She did know his name.
Scarlet raked a hand through her wild hair, but paused, looking at her hand. She counted the fingers.
One...
Two...
Three...
Four...
No more fingers.
She rubbed at the bloody bandages encasing the stub where her pinky used to be. She fisted her hand, suddenly angry. She wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
Something suddenly clanked, and Scarlet recoiled back into the darkness of her cell. There was a series of clicks and whirs, and, to her surprise, the bars of her cell slid open.
A face appeared in the open doorway, than another. Scarlet knew them. One faintly, the other more deeply. They were both young women, both younger than her.
One stared at her with an intensity that shook Scarlet to the core, but not with fear. Sympathy was also in the honey brown irises, and relief, and joy and overall, fatigue. She had a messy ponytail of brown hair, and she was leaning heavily on the other girl. She was beaten down with a black eye, but this didn't take any confidence away from her eyes. It was now that Scarlet noticed she was missing her left hand and her leg at the knee.
But that wasn't right, she was a-
A cyborg. Her cyborg hand and leg, they must have been taken.
The other was shorter, with the brightest, sky blue eyes. Her hair was blonde, and cut unevenly above her shoulders. Her gaze was uneasy and scared, and she mostly just stole glances at Scarlet. She was as beaten as the cyborg was.
She knew these people, she just... couldn't put her finger on it.
"Scarlet." The cyborg let out a relieved breath. "Are-" she hesitated, worry thick in her voice. "Are you alright?"
"Do you know who we are?" The blonde spoke up, her voice soft as a lullaby. Scarlet looked at them, her brows knit with concentration. Then she nodded.
"Do you want to see Wolf?" The name made the air around Scarlet freeze. She didn't know who said it, nor did she care.
Wolf.
His soft green eyes, his sharp face, scars strewn across it.
Scarlet almost fell onto her face she stumbled forward so fast.
She ignored the two girls and pushed them to the side, running to the nearest cell. Empty. She ran to the next. Empty. Finally, she found him, sitting cross-legged and twiddling his thumbs.
He looked terrible.
He had no shirt, but so many bloody bandages were wrapped around his chest that he didn't really need one. The bags beneath his eyes were as purple as new bruises, and his stubble had grown unruly into a full goatee. His nose twitched, and he bristled, head snapping up. His emerald eyes were, at first, filled with fear, but they sparkled and rimmed with tears when he registered Scarlet.
Scarlet didn't move, afraid that if she did, Wolf would disappear.
Scarlet's thoughts cleared. Wolf, he was alive, crushed, but alive, and he was sitting right in front of her.
She fell foreword, clambering into his embrace and holding tight. He hugged even tighter.
"Scarlet, my alpha wolf." She buried her face in his chest, immersing herself in his voice, the voice that had plagued her in the long days of imprisonment. "My brightest star." He kissed the top of her head, and she looked at him, his green eyes shining. She closed the gap between them, pressing her lips on his. He leaned into her.
My brightest star.
