The next day, I made sure to get up slightly earlier than usual to make sure that I was ready for when Zoe came to pick me up. I wasn't really excited or anything like most girls would be, I had never seen any of her videos or anything so I just saw her as a normal person.

I got up around nine o'clock as she was coming at eleven then got into the shower and decided what to wear. I wanted to wear a little bit of makeup but i didn't own any, so timidly, I went to ask one of the other girls if they had any I could borrow.

In the end, Jasmine, Rebecca ans Rosie insisted that they do my hair and makeup for me saying that "appearance is key" when meeting potential parents.

At half past ten, I was completely ready. My hair was curly at the ends with two small braids wrapped round my head to look like a hairband and I was wearing very simple makeup as I'm only thirteen.
Zoe was early, knocking on the door at quarter to eleven which meant that I only had to wait for fifteen minutes.

"Hey Daisy!" She said as she walked into the kitchen "you look lovely!"

"Hi and thanks" I said awkwardly.

"So, what do you want to do today?" She asks as we walk to her car.

"I don't know," I said, slightly embarrassed to admit that I have no idea what is in this town, even though I have lived here for my entire life. I was never allowed out my house, not even for school.

"How about we go back to my house and have a relaxed day? Then we can get to know each other better, " Zoe suggests.

"Sure" I reply.

~~

"Wow" I breathe as I stand in front of Zoe's massive house. Next to me, Zoe just laughs.

"I would live here?" I asked

"Yep" Zoe says then adds "You're not scared of dogs are you?"

"To tell you the truth, I've never seen a dog before"

She looks at me puzzled. "She's only small, she won't bite. Her name's Nala"

I nod anxiously, I'm not sure how I feel about dogs.

She opens the door and suddenly a little black dog runs to Zoe's feet, barking. Zoe must have felt me tense as she picks up Nala and turns to face me.

"She won't hurt you, I promise" she says, gesturing for me to stroke Nala.

Slowly, I hold out my hand and run it along Nala's jet black fur. She turns her head and licks my hand, making me jump.

"It's okay, that just shows she likes you" Zoe says.

She can tell that I still feel apprehensive though so she takes Nala away to another room.

"Let's go sit in the living room and then you can meet Alfie."

"Who's Alfie?" I ask. Sometimes i think that Zoe forgets I don't watcb her videos, although i make a mental note to have a look at some of them when I get back.

"Hey, Daisy."

I hear a male voice and look in the direction from which it is coming from.

Then I see him.

I begin to sweat, how did my Dad get into Zoe's house? (AN: just a hallucination, Alfie isn't her dad don't worry!)

He stands up and begins to walk over to me.

"No! Leave me alone!" I scream, replaying the last night I spent at home.

Zoe runs into the room immediately, to check whether I was okay. When she realised what was going on however, she went pale.

"She's scared of you Alfie!"

She lifts me up and begins to carry me to a different room. She then places me down gently on the bed and leaves the room. I hear her say something to Alfie so I go and stand near my bedroom door, knowing that they'll be talking about me.

"She hates me Zo"

"It's not you she hates Alfie, she just doesn't trust men after all she's been through,"

"She was shouting at me though, she looked scared"

"She thought that you were going to hurt her. She doesn't trust you yet."

"But why?" I hear Alfie ask.

"She doesn't trust men in general, not after what her dad did to her"

I hear Zoe walk over in the direction that I was and sit back down on the bed. I didn't want her to know that I had been listening to her conversation.

"Are you okay now?" She asks, looking worried.

"Yeah, I'm fine thanks"

"Do you want to come out for something to eat?"

"But doesn't Alfie hate me now?" I mumble, looking down at my lap.

"Don't be silly, of course he doesn't. He wants to get to know you properly and he wants you to be able to trust him"

And with that, she takes my hand and leads me to the kitchen.

When Zoe dropped me home, she went to go and speak to Mrs Hardey while I went up to my bedroom. About half an hour later, Mrs Hardey came and knocked on my bedroom door.

"Hey Daisy, have a good day?"

I just nodded in reply.

"I would like to speak to you for a minute, could you come to my office please?"

I followed her down the stairs in silence, walking past a few of the other children on the way. They looked at me oddly, obviously thinking I was in trouble or something.

"So," Mrs Hardey starts as soon as I sit down. "Did you enjoy your day with Zoe and Alfie today?"

"Yeah, I had fun." I say

"Could you imagine living there?"

"Yeah I like them and I love their dog."

"They'd like to adopt you,"

"Really?"

To be honest, I was surprised. I hadn't been in the orphanage for very long and there were other children who deserved it more than I did. What made me special?

"Obviously you won't be moving in straight away as you still have trust issues, but in a couple of months I imagine you'll be ready."

I can hardly contain my excitement. I've never had a proper home before and now in a couple of months I will have a family.

"You can go up to your room now," Mrs Hardey says. "You're going out again tomorrow."

"Thank you," I say and run up the stairs. I need to sort out my clothes for tomorrow.

After taking a shower and drying my hair, I jump into bed and, for the first time, I dream about something other than my biological father.
