note(this is long bc it's an update of a long article I don't want to write a new one so this is an updated version of the original version which is a bit different from the original it is more detailed in some parts than the original. in the original it wasn't really good now I'm going back to change the parts that was really bad ,hard to understand, etc, btw do you think that using a grammar checker is cheating I don't think so even know I don't use them)
On the 4th of January, somebody posted a message on 4chan
saying it was looking for highly intelligent individuals.
The following said there was a message hidden in the image. It started one of the most elaborate scavenger hunts of all time moments after it was posted. Somebody found out if you opened it in a text editor. There was a part of the readable text when deciphered
led to a link. (the link is https://i.imgur.com/m9sYK.jpg) It seemed like a dead-end since the image was a duck with the text beside saying" Woops just decoys the way looks like you can't [guess] how to get the message [out]". But using the software named outguess that was hidden in the words of the image. outguess extracted data from the image. They found another link that was found by outguess that led to a book and there you could make out a message that said "Call us at the telephone number (214) 390 - 9608". It was pre-recording that said you need to find 3 prime numbers in the original image. It said 3301 is one of them, multiply them and add a .com and you have the key to the next step; the other two are yours to find.
Many people started working on it but there were still questions aside, what was it for? Who is behind it? Some said it was just a troll, others said that it was so complex that why would they go so far in a troll?
The other two numbers were the dimensions.
When you multiplied 3301 by the dimensions, it gave the number which led to a website with a countdown.
When the countdown ended, it was updated with coordinates to go to at the location were posters with QR codes and a cicada 3301 symbol that everybody needed to find.
For people who thought this was a secret organization instead of a troll. They thought they were proved right. This wasn't the work of your average troll. It was something much bigger and more complex.
the QR codes were linked to an image and then linked to a book than a website. But it took an unexpected turn as only first arrivals were picked.
The website was taken down and it was eventually replaced with we want the best, not the followers.
The hunt was over a month later. As it turned out this was just the beginning.
The second puzzle:
The person behind cicada 3301 actually put a code at the bottom to make sure it was from cicada 3301 the first arrivers were told to make sure the code was correct to make sure it came from cicada 3301. A year later, they posted another puzzle and the hunt was reignited.
It wasn't different from the first. A few days later, a song called the instar emergence was uncovered. It was guitar music by cicada 3301 but nobody knows why they have this kind of music the longer you listened to it the weirder it gets.
An image called gematria primus was posted on Twitter saying it was vital to the cicada 3301 puzzle but it would be a mysterious tool for quite some time. The coordinates were revealed again for solvers to venture outside and find the codes.
And then again only a few got to the final stage.
and then it ended, unfortunately, this is not the end.
The third puzzle:
It was almost like the first. It leads to the book and produces a link. However, it was
wrapped around a strange book called the Liber Primus. It was written by cicada 3301
Finally, the gematria primus came into use. It had clues and was encrypted for example on one page. It said to seek out a page on the dark web.
Another page led to another recording called interconnectedness which was guitar music that got weirder and weirder again. the Liber Primus which was written by cicada in 3301 was only 58 pages; only two pages have been deciphered so far.
After two years, individuals suspected the Liber Primus had to be deciphered to continue.
It was confirmed by cicada 3301 message in 2016 saying The; Liber Primus leads the way the key is right in front of your eyes. Now 4 years have passed, with tiny amounts of progress and complete silence from cicada 3301.
Many people are trying to solve the Liber Primus. It is almost impossible but some people believe it's possible. But they need to look at things in a completely different way. One of the winners of the second puzzle was accepted, but cicada 3301 asked for patience. And now years later he got nothing from cicada 3301. He grouped others who got accepted from the second puzzle. They got the same experience (results), asked for patience, then nothing. Some people think it's the lead of the cypherpunks. Because in the first puzzle they asked questions about privacy and security-related things. They expected them to answer honestly which means they could possibly be remnants of the cypherpunk movement.
Many people thought it was an alternate reality game to boost a product or marketing campaign. It was used to make Halo 2 more popular and increase profits and more.
But the release of subsequent puzzles and complete lack of commercialization eliminated the possibility.
Some people say it's a recruitment program since intelligence companies did this before and many more did the same.
There's much more to the cypherpunk movement than it seems
One old member of the cypher punks said the cypherpunks are good at protecting themselves and staying anonymous. This could be why a single clue has not been let out in the open where people possibly can link to the person behind cicada 3301.
Many people out there need a clue, in my opinion, the cicada 3301 puzzle can be spread through years and even a millennia but cicada 3301 should really give us a clue like the second puzzle we may really have to be patient to see....
