Arashi told my father that he had some business so he would be joining us at dinner, besides, our luggages was at the inn, thus he had to go take those. I wanted to go with him but he said he needed to meet someone important.
My father insisted on staying until the wedding ceremony was over although Arashi didn't want to but he agreed at last and it didn't seem like my sister, Hayami's husband, Mr Bushida, liked it at all.
He would wrinkle his nose whenever he saw Arashi and moreover he would avoid staying in the room if I was present. Not that I felt sad about it, I just didn't want anything to do with him.
As Arashi left, the third lady came to my room. "Looks like your husband is treating you well."
I gave her a smile and nodded, "Yes. He certainly is."
"Good for you. At least someone from your status sees the worth in you."
I bit my tongue as I didn't want to say anything that would make Arashi's image down. I knew it would come to this sooner or later since they were more into statuses than the person.
Although my father didn't seem to do that and I was more than glad about it. He didn't treat Arashi with disrespect nor did he belittle him and same goes for the first lady and my middle sister, Hayami. They might consider me an outsider, but they didn't treat him poorly. It could be because Arashi had successfully cured my father.
I heard our elder sister, Chinami and her husband, Mr Dateko would be arriving in two days. Cinami had never liked me and I knew when both sisters came together, they would leave no chance to make me suffer like they used to. And I was prepared for it as long as they didn't treat Arashi.
The third lady's face twisted as I didn't comment anything and she said, "Come to the kitchen as we all have so many guests we can't do this single handedly."
I could feel the distaste in her voice as I nodded and stood up.
I followed her and as we entered, I saw the first lady was cutting all the vegetables while a maid was helping her with putting them in large containers and setting them aside. She occasionally took rest and tapped the back of her waist.
I went near the first lady and said, "Let me do it instead."
She hadn't noticed me and as she looked up, her eyes widened. She didn't expect me to come and help. I knew that father fancied Arashi more than his other two son-in-laws. I didn't know the reason why but because of this the first lady knew, calling me to do the household work would lead my father to be displeased with her. After all, being in his favor was the most she could yearn for.
"And let your father complain that I made his favorite son-in-law's wife work?" She scoffed. "No. You don't have to do anything."
She started to cut the vegetables in a grumpy manner and I could sense her displeasure for getting the whole responsibility of the food alone. Making meals with the maids for three-four times a day was certainly tiresome yet I had to do that when I lived with them. Now that I wasn't there it came upon the first lady. I knew I should be happy because she was getting the same feelings I used to get but somehow I felt bad for her.
The third lady was in charge of the preparation of the rooms and making sure everything was perfect so she left the kitchen already.
"Why don't you make the fish while I cut the vegetables? I'm sure my father loves that." I said and the first lady halted. She recalled father loved fish and it was a good opportunity to show off her skills.
She looked up and with hesitation, she nodded and left the place as I sat.
The maid had started to boil the vegetables as I prepared a dish that Arashi taught me. Of course, the ingredients we used weren't here but he taught me the alternatives.
The aroma of it lingered in the air as the third lady asked, a bit surprised, "Who taught you that?"
"My husband."
She had finished making the fishes and there were still a few dishes left.
"He can cook?"
"He can do everything." I answered.
"I see, he is treating you well." She said as she set aside the fishes.
I kept cooking and sensed she kept massaging her back. "You can go take a rest. We can do the rest." I offered.
"No. I am fine. Just the back pain bothers me from time to time."
"That is why I am telling you. Please go take a rest since you will be the one to serve everyone as the first lady of the house."
She looked at me for a moment and nodded. She was about to leave but she turned around as if she wanted to say anything but she didn't.
She left as the maid and I cooked the rest of the meals.
As we finished, I felt tired because making that many dishes for all of us was a lot of work. The maid excused herself as I went back to my room and found Arashi had returned.
"Where have you been?" He asked and then studied my face. I was sweating and my face had become dull because of the heat. Not to mention, the new yukata I was wearing was dirty.
"Were you cooking?" He asked and I nodded.
"I am sorry I dirtier the yukata. Let me go wash it right away." I said as I went for a new cloth.
"Don't tire yourself. You look like you can faint right now." He remarked with a straight face but I chuckled.
"No. I am not that tired besides I am accustomed to making meals for everyone."
As I took my clothes, I found Arashi a bit quiet. I looked at him questioningly.
"Are they...are they trying to make you work like they used to?" He asked, making me a bit shocked. He knew I used to work most but I had never said that they made me work like a maid. Did he assume it himself?
"What? No." I shook my head. "The first lady has back pain and she is getting old too so I asked if I could help."
Arashi seemed to be relieved as he heard that and nodded with a smile. "Then you did a good job."
My grin appeared as I said, "Then excuse me as I need to take a bath."
He nodded. "Be sure to take your time." And I went to the bathroom.
