Mr. Turner and I walk back into class. I grab my stuff from my desk and sit at the desk next to Mr. Turner's desk. I get started on the worksheet that Mr. Turner passed out. It only took 5 minutes for me to finish, since I had already read the chapter. I started doodling again, when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I look up and it was Mr. Turner with a disapproving look on his face. He told me I was supposed to be working on my assignment. I pulled it out and showed him that it was done. He then told me to start working on the study guide for the last 3 chapters since we would have a test in a few days. He proceeded to hand them out to the rest of the class.
About 20 minutes later, the bell rang. I put my stuff away but remained in my seat. After everyone left, Mr. Turner sat at his desk and was staring at me.
DJ " Sir, I'm sorry. I should have been paying attention and not have gotten an attitude with you."
Mr. Turner "What's going on? You are usually pretty respectful to me, even when I get on your case about something."
DJ "I don't know, I guess I am still upset at dad about not letting me get a job at DQ. It's like he doesn't trust me to make decisions for myself and to know what I can and can't handle."
Mr. Turner " If he said no, you know he has his reasons. He worries about you. He wants to protect you. You're his youngest daughter. Besides him and I discussed the job. He just figured it would be easier for you to adjust to in the summer and if things went well you could work next year. So the answer wasn't a no, it was not right now. I'm guessing you were too mad to hear that though."
DJ " Yes, sir. I guess I was acting like a spoiled brat. I took out my frustration on you. I'm so sorry."
Mr. Turner " It's ok. I'm assuming you got an attitude with him and are already in trouble with your dad. Am I correct?
DJ " Yes, sir. He paddled me this morning and I'm grounded for 2 weeks."
Mr. Turner "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably in more trouble now. After we got back in the class, I had an email from your dad waiting for me asking me what was going on. Apparently, another teacher had seen you leaving and called and told your dad. After we are done with our talk, I'm supposed to take you to your dad. I know you'll be in trouble with him, so consider us good. Just do better tomorrow. I love ya kid."
DJ " Oh shit, I'm dead. My ass will be on fire. I love you too."
Mr. Turner " Watch your language, young lady."
DJ "Sorry, sir."A few minutes later Mr. Turner and I are walking into dad's office. Dad was not very happy.
Dad "Young lady, why did you try to leave school?"
DJ " I was upset, Mr. Turner sent me to the hallway because I wasn't paying attention in class. I was doodling. I got upset and cussed at him and went for a walk. I'm sorry."
Dad "You will be. You have detention everyday this week, which I will be monitoring. You will be sitting at a desk in the corner closest to my desk. You will also have lunch in my office everyday this week, during which you will eat your lunch then stand in the corner with soap in your mouth. You are grounded for 2 more weeks, so now it is 1 month. You will also spend the rest of today with a sore butt. Pull your pants down and bend down and grab your ankles. You will hold position, or we will start over. You're getting 40."
DJ " Yes, sir". I knew there was no point arguing. I did as he said.
Mr. Turner " Danny, don't you think you're being too harsh. She got a little upset. No one got hurt."
Danny " No, she had an attitude this morning and was disrespectful. Then she wasn't paying attention in class and was disrespectful to you and then tried running away. She deserves this."
Mr. Turner " You disciplined her this morning for her behavior. Yes, she was disrespectful and then tried to leave, but she is a good kid. You're angry right now. Calm down then discipline her accordingly. "
Danny "She knew this was going to happen. She tried running away. What you didn't see was she stepped out in front of a moving car. The driver called me to let me know. She put herself in danger. I can't let that go unpunished."
Mr. Turner " You're right. I did not know that. That changes everything. I will leave you to it."
Mr. Turner left. He couldn't change dad's mind. I didn't know he knew about the car.
DJ "Sir, that was an accident. I didn't see the car."
Dad "Because you didn't look. You could've gotten yourself killed."
DJ " I'm sorry."
Dad " Get in position. "
Dad pulled out the strap from his desk drawer.
WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK
I stand up, I couldn't hold position. DJ " dad, please. I can't. Please can I go over the desk?"
Dad " No, back in position. Starting over."
WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK
Dad " You can get up."
I get up. I gently pull my pants up and fall into dad's arms crying. " I'm so sorry daddy, for everything. I love you."
Dad " I love you too sweetheart. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you. You must be careful. Here's a late pass. Go clean your face and get to class."
DJ"Yes, sir. See you in detention."
Dad "See ya. Be good."
DJ "Yes, sir. My butt will remind me. It burns."
Dad chuckles. I leave and go to the bathroom and wash my face, then off to class.
