August 28, 2020... Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Summertime. Mild day, perfect weather, sunshine, and the final dance competition of the Summer majorette season. Dejah, a girl dancer on the Detroit Divas, was giving it all in the Summer Buck Down competition. It was her last competition with this team but she didn't let them know that because she wanted everyone to do their best in this competition.
Exhausted she and her teammates sat on the grass and watched as their captains and coaches walked up to participate in the award ceremony.
"Thank you everyone for coming, can we give one more round of applause for all the wonderful boys and girls performing today!" the announcement said as everyone began to clap
"My name is DJ Lite and I will be announcing today's winners. Today we had 16 teams compete but only the top 3 dance teams will be announced and awarded with either bronze, silver, or gold and the corresponding trophy. Now, how this will work is when we announce the winning team the Coaches and Captains of that team will come up and collect the prizes. Who is ready to hear the top three teams that destroyed this competition?" the announcer continued as the crowd cheered again
"Alright, Coming in third place we have Golden Girls of Michigan!" DJ Lite announce
The crowd cheered and so did many of the other teams in good sportsmanship, but Dejah and her team could not seem to bring themselves to be happy for the others not because they were upset but because they were anxious.
"Coming in second place, the runner-up team is... Dancing Diamonds of NYC!"DJ Lite yelled
Dejah and her team began to cross their fingers as they watched the 2nd place award being handed to another team.
"Finally, the first-place team is... drumroll please?" requested DJ Lite as the teams started beating on the floor
"The West Hollywood Highsteppers, wow you guys are a far way from home!" Laughed DJ Light
The Detroit Divas immediately walked off the field with their heads down and tears rolling down their faces. The coach went looking for them and they were already packing their things on the bus, ready to hurry and fly home.
"Hey, hey, hey! Everyone stop what they are doing right now. I am so disappointed in every last one of you, not because we lost but because you didn't congratulate, clap for, or even smile at the winning teams. Poor sportsmanship is not cool, if you are gonna act like that you might as well quit dancing for good." The coach announced
The team all hung their heads down once again.
"Come on guys, I know this was our last competition and our last summer season but we have the fall season and we can end on a good note. Unfortunately, as I told you guys before, our team will be disbanding because of financial reasons but all of you are in high school so this fall so you have time to try out for your school's team and have four years there. This is not the end of your dance careers, you guys are all so very talented and will go far in life." smiled the coach
"It's not losing that made us upset, it was not placing at all. It was the first time we battled a big city team from a place that has so many opportunities for entertainment. Those teams have the kind of coaches that we would want to impress and now they will never know who we are coach Rivers." Dejah said
"That's not true, all they have to do is go as the judges for the scores and they will see that we made fourth." Coach River replied
"What are the odds that any team that ranked in the top three would look at scores for teams that didn't make it? We all know we missed our chance and may never get a chance like that again." Dejah put her head down getting on the team bus as everyone followed
