Tobias pov

I wake up to Will shaking my shoulder. "We're leaving in 10 minutes, let's go!"

I shoot up "what?" I yell. The other initiates stare at me.

"Oh we forgot to tell you, we're going on a field trip checking out jobs- we're going to the fence." I slowly nod. Then I realize that I'm not wearing a shirt and I have 5 minutes.

"Can you go grab breakfast while I get dressed?" I ask. He nods and leaves.

I race to get dressed. I am still pulling on my shoes as I run to the cafeteria to find Will. I bump into someone as I am running along the pits walls. "Watch it buddy," I say as I stand up. I just hear laughing.

I look to the person talking bit I just see the back of someone's head as they tie there shoe. "Dude, you gotta work on your Dauntless talk." The person says. I am about to answer when the person turns around and I realize that its Will with two half squished muffins.

I grab one of the muffins and say "well, when we get back, you can help me with my Dauntless talk." We laugh and eat as we run up towards the peer.

That's the building we saw when we were jumping onto the roof from the train. It's a big glass building that Dauntless can live in, and leads out side. It's also where the Pit gets most of it light.

I am terrified once we get to the top and we are outside. I know we're not that high up, but still, my brain tells me to run and get out of there- get to lower ground. I am dizzy.

I immediately hear the train tracks rattle. I know the train will be hear any second now- so I start to jog by the train tracks.

Six is running beside me. Her hair is whipping around her face. She is so beautiful. Snap out of it I think. The train zoomed past me and Six grabs the handle and pulls her self up gracefully. She is like a goddes I think as I pull my self up. I probably look like a sack of potatoes.

"You ok there, four? You look kind of stiff."

Molly and Drew laugh at his joke. They sound like diene cats.

"Are you sure you don't belong in Erudite? I hear they don't object to sissies."

Before Peter can retort, Six clears her throat. Her eyes are so beautiful I think.

"Am I going to have to listen to your bickering all the way to the fence?"

Every one shuts up, and Six turns towards the door. Half of her body is out, but her feet are firmly planted- she looks deep in thought.

I go stand beside her and try to see what she's looking at. I look at the crumbling, broken down buildings. Every few seconds my eyes shift back to Six.

Al walks up behind me.

"What do you think is out there," I nod out the door. "Past the fence, I mean."

"A bunch of farms, I guess." Al answers. Christina walks up beside Al.

"I mean...past the farms. What are we guarding the city from?"

Christina wiggles her fingers at me "monsters!" She says. I hit her hands away and we laugh.

I look over at Six. She looks like she did before, except her face has hardened and I see a flash of jealousy in her eyes- is she jealous of Christina? No, no. Of course not, she doesn't like me. Dose she?

I snap out of my thoughts when I hear Will saying my name. "Yes," I say, looking at him.

"We didn't even guard the fence until 5 years ago," will says. "The Dauntless used to guard the factionless. Do you remember that?"

"Yes." Is all I say.

"Oh right," he says. "I bet you saw them all of the time."

"Why do you say that." I say a little to sharply. I don't care though, I don't want to be associated to close to the factionless.

"Because you had to pass the factionless sector to get to school, right?"

"What did you do, memorize a map of the city?" Christina asks from behind me.

"Yes," will answers looking puzzled "didn't you?" We are all laughing when I hear the train wheels squeak.

The train actually stopped. I'm kind of glad we didn't have to jump. I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of Six.

Once were all on the ground Six jumps off of the train and stands in front all of us.

"Follow me," she says as she leads us to the gate, which is as big as a house."if you don't rank in the top 5 at the end of initiation, you will probably end up here." I don't want to work here I, I think. I can't worry about that right now though.

"Once you are a fence guard, there is some potential for advancement, but not much." Six adds. "You may be able to go on patrols beyond Amity farms, but-"

"Patrols for what purpose?" Will interrupts

Six shoots him a look, but answers his question. "I suppose you will discover that of you find yourself among them. As I was saying. For the most part, those who guard the fence when they are young continue to guard the fence." I would hate this job. I know it's not that bad- but I love the compound, and I want to stay there.

"What rank were you?" Peter asks, out of the blue.

I don't expect her to answer, but she looks levels at Peter, "I was first."

"And you chose to do this?" Peter's ayes are wide. "Why didn't you choose a government job?"

"I didn't want one," Six answers evenly. She turns and starts to talk to a female fence guard.

I hear a truck come up behind me, and I jumped out of the way. The driver jumps out of the cab and starts to talk to a guard by a pad lock. I realize this is a Amity truck.

There is a boy and a girl in the back of the truck staring at me. I realize this is Robert- the boy who lived next to me with his sister. He was one of the only kids to talk to me at school.

He starts waving at me and he bounds out of the truck towards me. "Hey T-" he was about to say my name. I shake my head vigorously. "Buddy?" He finishes. I am relived.

He grabs me and pulls me into a hug. I just stand there stiffly- ironically- this is how people greet each other in Amity.

He pulls back then frowns. "What happened to your face? And why didn't you want me to use your name?" He inquires. I didn't realize that I still had a black eye, and my nose is bruised.

"New place, new name. And initiation." Is all I say.

Six walks up behind me and puts a hand in my shoulder. I tense up immediately. "Maybe it's time you get going," she says to Robert. He just nods and walks off towards the truck.

She grabs my hand and takes me out of ear shot. "I am worried you have a knack for making unwise decisions," she says when only a foot away from me.

I cross my arms- I must look like a child- but I don't care. "It was a two minute conversation."

"I don't think a smaller time frame makes it any less unwise." She frowns and furrows her eyebrows- she's so cute, snap out of it- and touches the corner of the bruise on my eye. "I also mean walking out of your fight, don't let them know you feel weak. You won't get teased as much, and they will start to recognize how strong and powerful you are." Did she just compliment me? Well she takes her hand away.

"I'm surprised you know that," I say quietly "since you left."

"It wasn't something I wanted to watch," she says.

What's that supposed to mean?

She clears her throat. "Looks like the next train is here. Time to go Four."
