Y/N had basically been away from her mother since she was 16. She never really officially moved out, but started to spend more and more time staying at her partners homes instead of with her mother.

The two had never really gotten on, but through no fault of their own. They were simply too similar in personality and ended up clashing, like two bulls in a china shop.

Y/N's mother, Elena, had fought tooth and nail to give Y/N the best life she could, and had always been her sole protector despite all of their troubles. Y/N had always appreciated that, and she loved her mother endlessly for everything she'd ever done, but not all mother and daughters are meant to be best friends, it seems. She still saw her mother every couple of months, but only briefly, as if they spent any more time together then all hell broke loose.

It was with this in mind, that Y/N found herself sat in the back of a car across the street from her mothers house. She had so many questions, needed so many answers, and surely anything her mother could tell her would help Tom too. But would her mother tell her anything useful, if anything at all?

Carefully opening the squeaky front gate that was half falling off the fence post, Y/N stepped across the gravel to her mums front door, pausing in front of it as if she would knock and someone would shoot her dead.

Her phone dinged from her pocket, and she pulled it out to a text from Harrison. "I'm right here, call me if you need me."

Taking a deep breath, Y/N knocked on the glass of the door, staring down at her feet whilst she waited for movement from inside.

Her mother soon came hurrying down the stairs, and the curtain covering the glass crept to the side to reveal her mums face - hair curly from a recent shower and glasses perched on her nose just like her daughter - but the studying was short lived when the door swung open at full force.

"Oh! Y/N" Her mother breathed as she pulled her only daughter into a tight hug. "I haven't seen you in forever, how are you?"

Y/N paused. How do you tell your mother that you quit your job at the nice pub, started working for a mob boss, moved in with him, fell in love with him, almost died multiple times, witnessed a murder, battered a man almost to death and then almost lost your lover? Oh, and that your asshole dad is actually alive.

"Good, yeah. Great." She gave her mum a tight smile before stepping inside, closing the door behind her. "What about you?"

"Oh, y'know. Same as always. No sleep, aches & pains, barely getting by - if it wasn't for you I'd be bankrupt and homeless." Elena said in a sarcastic, chirpy way. Y/N knew she was grateful, but she knew her mum didn't like to make things sound depressing - giving her a small smile, she followed her into the living room.

-

"He's fucking what?"

Y/N rested her head in her hand, running her hand back through her hair "He's...alive? I don't know, it's him. Definitely him. But he just disappeared, I thought he went out for a walk and ended up dead or kidnapped, the police couldn't find him, y'know? But he's not."

Elena was staring at her daughter so intently, Y/N thought she'd turn to stone and snakes would shoot out of her mothers head. "Mum, please say something. I'm so confused." What she wanted to say was scared, but she didn't want her mum to worry - which didn't last long.

"Y/N...This photo. Where did you get it from again?" Elena pressed, obviously noticing something didn't add up about Y/N's bullshitted story of where she saw her dad.

Y/N paused, looking her mum in the eye, looking at the woman who always told her everything, protected her from everything, loved her no matter what.

So she told her everything. And her mum fainted.

-

"Miss..Miss...What's her surname?" Harrison, who'd bolted in from sitting in the car outside at the first ring, looked up at Y/N. She smirked at how polite he was still being.

"Rosen. She kept my grandma's name." Harrison nodded at her, looking back down at Elena's unconscious face.

"Miss Rosen, can you hear me okay? I need you to open your eyes if you can, okay?" He beckoned, pulling a small torch out of his cargo pocket.

Elena slowly opened her eyes, squinting as if she'd forgotten where she was, before bolting upright and reaching out for her daughter.

"What the FUCK were you thinking? What have you done?!"

Y/N knew she didn't mean it in a rude way, she was just terrified for her daughter, but it still stung a little. "I'm alright. I promise. It's all fine now, take it easy, lie back down" She said, rolling up the cardigan she'd taken off earlier and putting it under her mums head.

"The mob..." Elena mumbled, staring up at Harrison but looking straight through him.

"Yes ma'am, that's us-" Y/N slapped his arm, giving him a 'stop it' face, he chuckled in response.

Sitting up slowly, Elena looked around her living room with an empty look on her face.

"And...Leo..." Elena drawled.

"My dad." Y/N cut in to Harrison.

"He's...alive."

"Alive."

"...Alive."

There was a lingering silence for a few minutes, the only sound was the slight rustle from Harrison as he looked between Y/N and Elena, who were just wordlessly staring at eachother.

"Yeah. Alive. We all on the same page now?"

"Harrison!"

"What?"

Y/N gave him another stern look, as if telling him to not forget it's not normal for most people.

"Why didn't he...come home?..." Elena whimpered with tears in her eyes, drawing her knees up against her chest.

Y/N's heart shattered for her poor mum. The mum who suddenly had to do everything alone and did whatever she could to survive. Not just for her daughter, but for herself. She lost her soulmate, the love of her life. Y/N had been close enough to experience even a fragment of what that felt like. She couldn't imagine what it felt like for Elena.

Y/N's voice trembled as she tried her hardest to hold it together. "I don't know mum...I don't know."
