Act I Chapter II ━ The Incident at Forest Hills

JULES HAD LANDED HERSELF AN INVITATION to Eddie's place that night. Their post-game conversation had broached the subject of her headaches, the boy offering to give her something to take off the edge. Having heard about his side job through hushed whispers, she only hesitates for a second before agreeing.

She agrees because she can feel the ache building once again. It's only mild, pressing at the back of her skull, but she knows it will only get worse as the hours pass by. She could do with something in her system to slow down the process. Tylenol wasn't cutting it.

After bidding the other party members goodbye, she starts her walk towards the trailer park. Eddie had offered up a ride, but she refused, saying she could use the fresh air after being inside for so long. He wouldn't budge for a good few minutes, clearly worried for the girl. With her strong reassurances that she'd be perfectly fine, he finally gave in.

❝Be careful.❞ He had muttered to her.

❝I will.❞ Her response had been soft.

She had watched him drive off in his van, his eyes not leaving the side mirror until he absolutely had to. She noticed he seemed to do that a lot ━ stare at her. It was only strange considering that he'd barely noticed her over the years. She was only ever going to be a footnote in the story of his life, probably saying Roxanne the Valiant: Death Before Dishonor.

The silence that blanketed her was suddenly wrought away by a figure appearing next to her, giving her a fright. She yanks the headphones from her ears, letting them hang around her neck. Iron Maiden's Sanctuary was muffled against her throat, her fingers pressing the stop button on her Walkman to cease Paul Di'Anno's voice.

The person was none other than Quinn Drake, a person that Jules could call a good friend. He was just like her ━ a freak. Proud of his abnormality, as he should be, he waved it around like a flag. He was a lot like Eddie in some ways, now that she thought about it. They were both loud, fiercely protective, and they both vehemently hated anything that reeked of conformity.

Whilst Eddie was all bark, Quinn was equal parts bark and bite. He didn't wear his rings just for decoration; they were also for damage.

❝Whatcha doing walking all by yourself?❞ Quinn's voice breaks her thoughts, his elbow brushing against hers. He's wearing a thick sweater, one that she'd positively drown in. When she notices, she suddenly feels cold, regretting the decision to not bring a jacket to school. The thin Black Sabbath shirt didn't do much more than cover the necessary bits.
