He woke up to rustling from the bed next to him. Sirius's shadow could be seen climbing out of Remus's bed and walking across the dorm to the bathroom and starting his morning routine.

Sirius spent a lot of time in Remus's bed since they got back this year. James didn't really mind, as long as it helped with his nightmares.

He rolled over and looked at his bedside clock.

He had time to get a morning practice in but they had spent most of last night planning pranks so he rolled over and tried to get more sleep instead.

Walking to the great hall for breakfast, or walking anywhere really, had become more and more dangerous. With the start of the war the Slytherins became more and more unpredictable with their insults and attacks on unsuspecting (usually younger and with some form of muggle heritage) students.

The boys walked to breakfast and to class alone today, the girls had already left by the time they were ready. James and Sirius had stopped two different pairs of Slytherins tormenting younger students on the way to class and it was only 9am.

Remus and Peter normally stayed behind them when they would intervene. Remus was half muggle himself and didn't want to make it worse, and Peter was always too scared to get involved, he was only a little over 5'6 anyway.

"Oi! Lily!" James yelled down the hall. He had spotted Lily's red hair, standing next to Snape.
"What Potter?" She turned around. Snape looked appalled at the fact that she even turned around.

"Evans, how many wizards does it take to screw in a light bulb?" James grinned.
"How many Potter?"
"Two." He giggled to himself.
"Why?"
"One to hold the bulb and one to rotate the room." James busted out laughing and to his surprise Lily giggled too.

Snape scoffed from next to Lily.

"Severus?" She turned to him confused.
"You can slack off and be late to class if you want but I won't be." He stormed off leaving Lily standing there confused.
"Come on Lily." James grabbed her bag from where it had been sitting on the floor. "We will walk you to class won't we boys?"

His classes that day were uneventful. By lunch he was practically falling asleep walking. That was until he saw Snape standing and talking with two of the Slytherin boys that were tormenting students earlier that morning.

"Oi Padfoot." James nudged Sirius. "Check it out." He pointed down the hall at them.
"Oh of course Snivellus is friends with those dickheads." Sirius scoffed.

Peter looked nervous, he was playing with his hands and staring at the three talking down the hall. "We should go shouldn't we?"
"No Petey boy, this is a perfect chance." James cracked his knuckles.
"Prongs what the hell are you going to do?" Remus finally looked up from his book. "Cause if you're about to challenge them to a fight I'm going to have to intervene because that is a terrible idea."

"No fighting. Just talking." James shrugged before strutting up to the three boys, Sirius right behind him.
"Oi Snivellus. Why don't you tell your boys to lay off the younger students. I mean really picking on the smaller guy? That's just not right." James said when he reached the group.
"Why don't you piss off Potter. And take that with you." Snape pointed at Sirius who would have charged him if James didn't put his hand out.
"Honestly Snivy I thought you were better than that." James looked down at him. "It's a wonder Lily is still friends with you with all the shit you say."
"At least Lily talks to me." Snape bit back. "She can't even look at you."
"I don't know, she looked at him an awful lot when we walked her to class this morning after you got butthurt and left her." Sirius laughed.
"Shut it traitor." Was all Snape had to say before turning and leaving with the other boys.
