"You're failing chemistry?"
I looked up from my laptop at the kitchen bench to see Alex leaning against the doorframe, wearing his reading glasses and holding a piece of paper which I assumed was a letter from the school.
I sighed and got up from the stool to get myself a glass of water, taking a break from my homework. I was supposed to be writing a 1000 word essay for English but I couldn't remember the book we'd read. I'd had to rely on ol' faithful sparknotes.
"Yeah but I've got it under control now don't worry" I replied as I filled the glass.
Things between Alex and I had remained tense and awkward since the party. I knew it was my job to apologize but Alex had been giving me some space ever since I blew up at him and it was honestly nice to be alone with my thoughts without having the pressure of being the person Alex wanted me to be.
He pushed off the door frame and sat down on the stool next to me, sliding the letter over for me to read. I looked it over briefly. It was basically some nonsense stating that once a student got a fail grade a parent and/or guardian had to be notified immediately so they could 'work on your child's results as a team rather than individually'.
"What happened K? I know Chem was never your strong suit, but you're not a fail student!" he said in a strained voice.
I sighed and put my head in my hands. I resented him talking about past me in present tense. I was a different person now. For all he knew me now, I was a fail student.
"You know what, I would tell you what happened if I could remember but it looks like old me must have slacked off or something. But I told you, I got a tutor and it's all under control, you don't have to worry" I replied.
Alex seemed to calm down a little and accept what I was saying. "Okay, who's your tutor?" he asked offhandedly, making his way to the door.
"Some asshole named Blake" I replied.
Alex stopped and tensed in the doorway, turning around to face me again. "Blake, as in Blake Carter?" he asked, his voice strained and on edge.
I looked up curiously. Did Alex know him or something? "Yeah that's the one" I replied. "Why, is there something wrong?" I asked.
"Nah he just sounds familiar is all" Alex said, but still he lingered, muscles strained and seemingly staring at nothing.
