i don't know how long we stayed like that, wrapped in each other's arms, just existing together.

i must've fallen asleep at some point because when my eyes opened it was dark.

i rolled over to face JJ who stirred beside me.

"hey," he whispered.

"hi," i reached up and pulled a strand of sandy hair.

"what time is it?" he stroked lazy circles on my back.

"late," i shrugged. "or early."

"let's go to the beach," i felt the curve of his lips against my neck.

"alright," i replied, sitting up.

the moonlight filtered through my half-drawn curtains, giving us just enough light to find our clothes and tug them on.

"have you seen my dress?" i couldn't see it anywhere.

"no," JJ plucked his shirt off the floor and held it out. "wear this."

i grinned and let him pull his blue t-shirt over my head.

it reached my mid-thigh but JJ grinned.

"perfect fit,"

i rolled my eyes and grabbed his warm hand. "come on,"

the house was the quietest i'd ever heard it.

my brothers had always stayed up late, smoking or drinking or partying with random Hawaiian girls.

it was almost creepy but i led JJ down the stairs and through the kitchen.

i glanced at the clock above the door.

5.20am.

"we can watch the sunrise," i told him.

"i've never seen one," he frowned. "well not on purpose."

"what's that supposed to mean?" i laughed.

"i either just didn't sleep or... my dad." he stared into the distance.

"John B told me," i squeezed his hand tighter as we neared the beach.

"i should've told you myself." he bit his lip. "i was going to but... i don't know why i didn't."

"it's okay," i smiled at him as i sat down.

he just shrugged, sitting behind me and pulling me backwards so i rested against him.

"my oldest brother was horrible too." i said.

"Kai?" he asked.

"no, but you have a good memory."

there was a short silence.

"i had another brother—half brother. he was called Rio," i took a deep breath. "he died."

"can i ask what happened?"

"he would drink a lot. a lot more than the others."

"your other brothers?"

i nodded. "he was like my family's little secret. my Dad had an affair with an Australian woman a few years into his relationship with my Mom."

the sun began to peak over the horizon, sending red and orange streaks through the sky.

"his own Mom did a runner and my Mom raised him as her own but he had this temper... if something didn't go his way he'd break stuff or smash windows or hit us... one time he chased Leo round the house with a knife over some stupid little thing."
