One Year Later
"Galaxy Garrison flight log 5-11-14, begin descent to Kerberos for rescue mission." Percy announced to his two crewmates in a nonchalant tone, swooping into a nosedive. The icy planet was in sight and the controls felt just right under his hands. The engine of the spacecraft purred, though not in a good way.
He would need to check on that later, though he was sure they would survive through one rescue mission without crashing and dying.
Probably.
"Percyyyy" Grover complained from his seat behind him, "no fancy footwork please, I don't think my stomach can take this for much longer."
"Grover, my man, my pal, you've gotta get used to flying. You can't throw up in the backseat of-" The sound of retching and the putrid smell of vomit interrupted his sentence. Sheesh. Percy felt bad for the dude, he really did. They had been buddies for a year now and the vomiting never got old.
Though, apparently for Annabeth it did.
"Grover!' She hissed, voice remaining just under the tone of a yell, "The gear box?"
Now Percy really didn't want to look behind him. Just as the rustling sound of Grover poking his head out of the gearbox to wipe his mouth was heard, shrill alarms and flashing red lights beamed.
"I'm picking up a distress beacon, though a hydraulic stabilizer is out." Annabeth claimed in that sharp yet calm tone of hers. Percy didn't know how she managed to act in such a way when there was probably vomit pooling out of their tool box.
"Grover!" Percy called, "That ones on you, get to working dude!"
"But-"
"Just focus on fixing, and i'll give us a safe landing."
Percy heard a distressed noise from the back, though he couldn't tell if it was Annabeth or Grover who made the noise. Probably both of them.
"You seriously aren't planning on landing this thing, are you?" Annabeth called over the alarm system.
"We're the rescue team, of course I plan on landing this thing!" Percy called over his shoulder, shifting the steering stick into a tighter grip.
"If we manage to land, then we're going to be the ones needing rescuing!" Grover groaned, slipping over his own mess to scramble back to his seat.
And yeah, in hindsight, they were totally right, and Percy was totally wrong. But he knew how important this mission was for all of them, and he wasn't going to opt out of it without a fight. He put the spacecraft into yet another nosedive, Grover's favorite maneuver, and it went about as well as any of them expected.
"Tacos!" Grover cried.
"I told you so!" Annabeth screamed over the alarms, right as they were about to crash land on icy Kerberos.
And yeah, Percy deserved that.
Just before impact, the window of the spacecraft blacked out to a blank screen with the words 'simulation failed' in giant red letters, though it looked more like 'You're a failure' to Percy, and that wasn't his dyslexia talking.
The doors to the cockpit slid open, revealing the figure of a man who stood at about five feet even. "Roll out cupcakes!' commander Gleeson Hedge demanded "So I can use an example of you!"
The three of them marched out of the simulator and Percy got his first look at Grovers green face and Annabeth's downcast one. Their class of a dozen people all stared at them with varying levels of amusement, as if this had been the expected outcome, and it made Percy's blood boil. Sure, they were a ragtag group of cadets thrown together last minute, with an engineer who threw up anytime they flew, and a pilot with severe ADHD, but that didn't make him feel any better.
