Mike and I are jolted awake by the sound of the girl's screaming. We rush out of bed and into the room of our daughters. We find the girls crying hugging each other on Sunny's bed. We flick on the light.
"What's wrong?", I ask as Mike and I sit on the end of the bed.
The girls just point to the window. We follow their gaze.
"Did you see something out there?", Mike asks.
They nod. Mike and I give each other a look and Mike gets up to look around outside.
"It's okay. You're safe.", I say as I pull them into a hug.
A few minutes pass and Mike comes back. A confused expression on his face carrying a strange object in his hands.
"What's wrong?", I ask, concerned.
"Can we talk in the hall real quick?", He asks.
Oh no, I think.
I let go of the girls and walk out into the hall and leave the door open.
Mike holds out the strange object and allows me to get a better look at it. It's a camera.
"I found this outside.", He says. I look at him in horror.
"Shit. We have to report this.", I say, starting to panic.
"Momma?", Sunny says. She stands in the doorway holding her sister's hand.
"Yes, baby?"
"Can we sleep with you and daddy tonight?", She asks.
"Of course. C'mon.", I say holding out my hand to lead them to our bedroom. I mouth, "Call the police" at Mike and he nods.
I tuck the girls in and kiss them both on their heads.
"Mommy, I'm scared.", Adley says.
"I know, baby. But as long as I'm around you'll be safe, okay? Nothing will ever happen to you.", I say.
"Promise?", The girls ask in unison.
"Promise.", I say and give them another kiss.
I cuddle with him until they fall asleep. I carefully get up and quietly walk into the living room. I see Mike on the phone pacing.
"Yeah, okay see you soon.", He says and hangs up the phone.
"The police will be here in the morning. I also called Hop and he and Joyce are coming over.", He tells me.
"Okay. The girls were pretty shaken up. I got them to sleep though.", I say, tears brimming my eyes.
He walks over to me and pulls me into an embrace. I bury my face in his neck, a sob forces its way out of me. He strokes my hair.
I pull away from the hug and see his face is also red and littered with water droplets. I lift my hands to his face and wipe away his tears with my thumb. I then slowly lean in and connect our lips for a second or two and pull away.
We go to sit down on the couch. I lean my head on his shoulder and he leans his head on mine.
"I'm scared.", I say.
"Me too.", He says.
Two hours later...
Mike and I wake up to the sound of tires coming to a stop in our gravel driveway. We get up from our cuddling position and walk over to the front door and open it. My dad gets out of his car and I run and jump into his arms.
"Hey, kid.", He says softly.
I pull away and hug Joyce.
"Are you guys okay?", Joyce asks us.
We nod and lead them inside.
"What happened?", Dad asks.
We fill him and Joyce in on what happened.
"Are the girls okay?", Joyce asks when we finish.
"Yeah, they're asleep in our bed. Speaking of which, we should go check on them.", I say, remembering that we haven't checked on them since they fell asleep.
We all walk to Mike and I's bedroom and carefully open the door as quietly as possible. We find the girls cuddling sound asleep in our bed. We close the door just as quietly as we opened it.
"Thank god.", I sigh.
We all go back to the living room and sit down, waiting, trying to pass the time until the police arrive.
