remnants (n.)
a small part of something that remains after the rest has gone; a small trace of something such as a feeling or emotion
"Thanks." I got out of Liam's car and closed the door waving as he pulled away, not looking the happiest.Instead of going to my car I headed up the porch steps. My confidence faltered as I raised my hand to knock on His door. I knocked gently and stepped back, looking away, over at the neighbors, down at my feet, anywhere but at the door. Finally I heard footsteps and the door swung open. I slowly looked up.
"Stevie?" He looked surprised to see me.
"I'm sorry to just show up like this it's just that I wanted to grab a few things and then I needed my car so I came to get that." I spoke apologetically, really hoping I hadn't interrupted anything. He had left for a reason earlier so I hope that His reason wasn't something He was still doing.
"Oh, no it's fine! Come on in!" As we walked over towards our-I mean His bedroom He spoke. "How did you get here? Just wondering since your car is still here."
"I had Liam drop me off, which he wasn't too pleased with." I mumbled the second part, not wanting Him to know that Liam and I are having our first real fight since I started staying with him.
"I see! Here let me help you with that." He seemed reluctant but held some of the things I was grabbing, just some textbooks, since my online schooling started up again soon, and my project bag. I got the project down from the shelf in the closet and noticed He had already gotten my book bag and placed my books in it.
"Thank you!" We shared a smile and I set the bag in my arms next to the one on the bed.
"Um, if I were to text you later tonight would you be okay with that?" I smiled to myself, heart fluttering at the fact that He was asking my permission to talk to me, even just through text messages.
"Of course, you can text me all you want, I'll try to answer as often as possible. Tonight is registration for online classes so I'll be doing that, but I should have some excess time." I gratefully hugged him and grabbed the two bags.He led the way to the door and took the project bag from my arm, following me out to my car. I opened the back seat and threw my book bag in, taking the bag from Him and placing it in also. Closing the door and opening the front one I realized I didn't have the keys, they were inside.
"Looking for these?" He chuckled and dangled the keys in between us. I blushed and grabbed them, mumbling another thank you. He laughed a bit more, eyes crinkled up and head slightly tilted backwards. It brought a smile to my face.
"I guess I should probably go then." I looked over towards the house diagonal to His, seeing my old neighbor peeking out at us, upon seeing me she smiled and waved, causing me to blush and look down.
"Why are you blushing?" Two of His fingers hooked themselves under my chin and gently brought my head upwards, making our eyes meet.
"We are giving the neighbors the wrong idea. Currently, Mrs. Edwards is looking out her window at us, I saw and she smiled and waved. That's why I blushed. But, you moving my chin up like that and from the way we are stood, I'm sure she thinks we're about to kiss." I blushed again, but his hand prevented me from looking down this time.
"Should we give the old lady what she wants?" His hand found its way onto my waist and the thumb of the hand currently on my chin ran over my bottom lip.
"I'm not sure that is a good idea." His face fell along with his thumb, and then His grip on my waist loosened.
"But I would never deny a sweet old lady from the things she wants; she may not live to see many more of these moments." I spoke truthfully; Mrs. Edwards was in her nineties and was sick. He smiled down at me and soon enough I was met with the familiar, amazing feel of His soft lips gently caressing mine. It ended all too soon for me, but as soon as it was over I was enveloped in His warm embrace.
"I missed your kisses." He spoke, chest rumbling in my ear. I hummed in agreement. Truthfully, I had missed them too, but I don't know if it was a good move on my part to let Him kiss me. Liam and I have been going on dates and stuff, of course we haven't made it official yet, but I think he might want to.
"I'm going to go now; I have to stop at the store on the way to Liam's place." He released me from the hug and kissed my forehead before telling me goodbye and telling me to drive safe. I drove off and went passed the store to grab some groceries before heading back to the house.
As I walked inside I was worried as to how Liam was going to act towards me, considering we hadn't exactly agreed on things earlier. The apology I had gotten from him was okay, but I still was upset that he blew up on me like that, and I know that he won't be happy that I was at His house for that long.
"Oh, you're back!" Liam was smiling and walking towards me with arms outstretched for a hug. I was confused but hugged him back before grabbing the grocery bags I had set down and heading for the kitchen. After picking up some of the other bags, Liam met me in there and began putting things away.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean to upset you and I really hope you'll forgive me." Our comfortable silence was broken and all of my hopes of just ignoring the problem for a while were thrown out the window.
"I guess I just don't really like the idea of you two being alone." Liam mumbled something after that and I wasn't quite sure what he said.
"I forgive you as long as you just ask me next time, preferably before you yell."
"Of course, I should have done that in the first place." Nodding I turned and offered a small smile to him which he quickly returned.
We finished with the groceries and headed for the living room. I went towards the door and ran outside quickly to grab the two bags I had left in the back seat of my car. Once back inside I went over to the couch and sat down, placing the bags at my feet.
"What's that?"
"Well, one is my book bag because I have class registration tonight and then my schooling starts up again soon and the other is my project bag that has my knitting in it." Nodding, Liam reached into my project bag and pulled out the small headband I had been working on, examining it and even trying it on, earning a laugh from me. As he messed around I pulled out my laptop, signing on to the school website.
After a few hours, I had my schedule for the upcoming semester and Liam had put my book bag over in the office. I was now continuing on my headband and he seemed to be completely amazed at how I could create something to wear with just a string and some needles. Even going so far as to make me try to teach him, Liam kept joking that the reason he couldn't do it was because I was magic. I just laughed and went along with it.Finally, I finished it and placed it in the bag, taking out my phone instead. I had one new message:
From: Him
Hey Stevie!
He and I chatted back and forth for a while after that before I decided to head off to bed. I went upstairs and laid down, placing my phone on the nightstand and plugging it in using Liam's charger. When he came up to bed I heard him using a phone, the familiar sounds of a phone unlocking and the keyboard clicking as he typed filling the room. The phone was set down and went off once more, before he climbed into bed behind me and his arm rested across my stomach. I fell asleep shortly after him, his snores serving as a lullaby.
