CHAPTER EIGHT

Beth's jaw dropped and she began to shake as she tried to process the impossible truth. He's going to kill me, she realized. He's one of them. My father is one of the warlocks!

"I'm so sorry, sweetheart. It will be over quickly, I promise," Lewis said. He looked genuinely remorseful, but that didn't change the fact that he had a dagger in his hand.

"No!" Beth shouted. "How could you? You're a good man... You've never hurt me or Kevin... You take in stray kids who have nowhere else to go... You go to church every Sunday... You're mortal... You don't even know about the supernatural!"

"Bethany, it's complicated," Lewis replied in a sad tone. "Now, please, don't make this any more difficult than it has to be..." He raised the dagger above his head and Beth could feel the energy vibrating from inside of it.

Run, Beth thought. He's going to kill you, Beth. Run!

Her body refused to listen to her. She stood there in shock, staring at the dagger as her father started to bring it down toward her.

"Drop the dagger, Lewis," Jade said firmly, appearing behind him.

"You don't want to get in my way, Jade. I don't want to have to hurt you, too" Lewis replied. "You've been through enough. Walk away."

Jade stared at the dagger and it flew into her hand. Lewis gasped and stared at her in surprise. "You're telekinetic?" He finally asked.

"You catch on quick, huh?" Jade asked, trying to keep her tone icy. She could not allow this betrayal to throw her right now. Yes, she had trusted Lewis, but clearly he was one of the bad guys and she needed to focus or she and Beth were going to be killed.

"Give that back to me," Lewis said.

Jade laughed. "You are kidding, right?" She noticed that there was something bulky in Lewis's jacket. Guessing what it was, she used her telekinesis to call it to her. Sure enough, it was a gun. "Back up plan?" She asked. She aimed the gun at Lewis and held it steady, then looked at Beth. "Beth, get out of the house. Go find Randy or Alex or anyone. Just go."

"Jade, don't hurt him," Beth begged with tears in her eyes. "He's got to be possessed or in a trance or something... That stuff happens, right? I mean... It's my dad. He doesn't even know about this stuff."

"If that turns out to be the case, I'll resurrect him, but all I know right now is that he just tried to kill you," Jade replied.

"Daddy, tell her... Tell me... Make me understand," Beth sobbed.

"I can't," Lewis said softly, lowering his head. He lifted it again quickly, not wanting to take his eyes off of the gun for too long. "I can't explain this to you, Beth. I wish that I could."

"Yes, I know how to use a gun," Jade said suddenly. "I'm telepathic, too, Lewis. I know exactly what you're thinking. And yes, I will shoot you if I have to."

Joey suddenly appeared behind Beth. "Joey, get out of here," Jade said quickly. "Go get help. Take Beth somewhere safe."

"I'm not leaving," Beth said. "I can't keep running away, Jade."

Jade shook her head, but she knew Beth wouldn't budge, and she had to get her son out of there. "Fine. Joey, just go, baby. Get Alex or Spencer or Aideen, okay? Go to whoever you can find first. Then stay away until I tell you it's safe."

Sensing how serious the situation was, Joey did not question things. "Okay, Mama," he replied before vanishing.

"That explains how he's always disappearing on us," Lewis mumbled.
