CHAPTER TWELVE

Spencer was sitting in front of his scrying mirror waiting for... something. He wasn't sure why, but his instincts had told him to scry. Nothing was appearing before him. He was about to give up after nearly twenty minutes when the black surface began to change. Suddenly, Spencer was seeing another place.

Jade and Beth were surrounded by warlocks. The attack was strong, and they were nearly defenseless. Jade was stabbed several times and started bleeding to death. Beth collapsed beside her, taking on Jade's injuries too quickly to recover. Within minutes, Jade was dead, and Beth was heading in the same direction.

Time shifted, and Beth was healed, but hysterical. Jade was still dead. Aideen looked at Spencer and whispered, "I'm sorry. I can't fix her this time."

Spencer suddenly gasped as the images in the scrying mirror faded away and his bedroom came back into focus. Before he could stop himself, he started to cry softly.

One of us will be dead by the end of September and won't be able to be fixed. What if it's sooner rather than later? What if it's Jade? Spencer's thoughts raced over the prophecy he had discovered with Cierra the previous September, while they were looking for information on the key to a tomb that held the apocalypse. He had tried to push the prophecy out of his mind, but now, it forced its way back into the center of his thoughts.

Picking up the telephone, Spencer called Cierra. She answered on the first ring, as usual. "What's up, Spencer?" Cierra asked.

Although Cierra's ability to always know who was calling before the telephone rang sometimes freaked people out, Spencer was used to it. "I'm worried about something," Spencer said.

"What's wrong?" Cierra replied in concern.

"I had a vision..." Spencer sighed. There was no use in beating around the bush. "Jade died."

"Wow," Cierra said, allowing herself to take that information in. "Okay, first of all, are you alright?"

"I don't know. I'm not even sure if it was accurate. Visions can be literal or symbolic... It's just... In the vision, Aideen said she couldn't fix Jade, and I couldn't help but wonder if..."

"If she's the one? She can't be, Spencer," Cierra said firmly. "There's no way Jade's going to die."

"How do you know, Cierra?"

"Well... Because she can't. I mean, she has Joey to take care of, if nothing else. Besides, she's Beth's guardian, right? In the spiritual world, at least one of your guardians isn't allowed to die before you. Their time has to come after yours. Beth already lost Timmy. So, unless Beth dies, too, Jade has to be fixed."

Spencer was relieved by Cierra's logical argument, but he was still concerned, especially because she'd probably intentionally left Josh out of the equation. Technically, as long as Josh was alive, Jade could die before Beth without upsetting the balance. "You're right... It's just this nagging feeling..."

"We'll find a way to stop that prophecy, Spence. We always stop the bad stuff."

"We won't be able to stop this, Cierra."

"Maybe we should tell Alex. I mean, we didn't before because of how chaotic everything was at the time, but I think he needs to know."

"I don't think Alex can stop this either, but I guess we should tell him. He should be prepared." He sighed. "Especially if it's Jade."

"It's not Jade, Spence. Really. It is scientifically impossible," Cierra insisted.

"Then why wasn't Aideen able to fix her?" He asked softly.
