I sat there in the bitter cold. People just wandered by asking me if I needed help but I replied 'no'. My hands clenched onto my short hair. I started to sob. We were so close. I liked her since elementary. We grew up through middle school, and thats when I decided to show it. She started straightening her hair and painting her nails. I was in love. I only had her for three classes but I spent them with her. A freezing gust of wind blew in my face, making me shiver more. My tears froze urging me to cry more. She started wearing makeup and wearing less clothing. It went too far where I actually spoke.
I remember telling her,"Your beautiful no matter what you do but your the most when your yourself."
I saw her blush. The next day she was normal. Except this time she was with me. She smiled and laughed with me. We learned together. We started holding hands in the hallways. Others started to notice. I wiped my face with my sleeve and sniffled. One night I was at her house for a study date. It was late and I was reckless. I kissed her on the cheek and left. At school she gave me another hug but she was wearing make-up and she dyed her hair red. She started hugging other guys and skipping classes. I asked her to stop and we got in an argument. She said I needed loosen up, that I was acting like I was still a child. She yelled at me.
"What's wrong" I asked her, she was crying.
She told me she was pregnant. I didn't go to school today. I didn't go home either. I got up from the porch step and walked inside.
"Hey, how was school?" My mom asked me as I came in. "Fine." I said on my way upstairs. " Is Shelbi coming over today?" she asked. "no." I replied and went in my room.
I went to my nightstand, picked up the picture of us and threw it against the wall. The frame shattered and there was glass on the floor. A large cut bled from my hand. I ignored it feeling a worse pain in my heart. I sobbed in my hands getting blood all over my cheek.
"Kason, can I come in? Is everything all right?" I hear mom say through my door.
I bit the sleeve of my jacket soaked in blood and tears. I heard my doorknob jiggle and then open. I remembered she had a key.
"Hey, what happened?" She sat down next to me on the floor. I didn't reply. I see her head move and glance at the broken glass and frame.
"Was it Shelbi?" she asked. Tears soaked the floor to the question. "Oh, baby, it's ok, She's probably going through a phase or somethings going on with her parents." she tried to comfort me.
"She's pregnant." I said quietly. I saw her eyes grow big and she stood up. "There will be others, don't worry." She said on her way out the room.
When she closed the door. I got up and locked it again. I sat down on my bed and grabbed my phone. I texted her cell.
"You there?" I sent the message and studied the phone waiting for a reply. "Why are you still texting me? I used you,ok? Now stop texting me." The message popped up and I sobbed.
I set the phone down on the night stand and walked out the room, sniffling. "You good now?" I heard my mom ask.I shook my head and sat down at the table. She sat down next to me and started bandaging my hand.
"It's the end of your junior year, senior year is much worse." She said. I dried my eyes. "She wasn't for you, that's for sure. Did you notice her personality?" She asked. "No" I replied.
She got a rag and started dabbing my face. "I'm not going to make choices for you but please just be yourself, don't be someone else to impress. Be you." She finished my aid and then got up to finish dinner. "We're having Alfredo tonight." she said from the kitchen stove.
I went to my room and then grabbed my phone. I had a message. It wasn't from Shelbi. "Hey I heard you and Shelbi broke up?" Brandon, my friend, text.
About twenty other messages followed. Even from random kids from school. I saw the messages and took out the battery. " Dinners ready!"Mom called from the kitchen. "Hold on!" I called back shoving the battery in my pocket. I rushed into the kitchen. "Your face is still red. Sweetie go rinse your face, I can't eat seeing you so stressed." She said.
I got up and rinsed my hair and face. I looked up in the mirror and saw my black hair frizzled and my face clearing up from the crying. I sit back down. I start eating but not as usual. I at e faster. "Slow down, your gonna get a stomach ache." She eye balls my movements.
"Are you going to school tomorrow? If not you need to tell me so I can call Brandon's mom to watch you." She waited for an answer. "Yah I'm going," I scoffed.
She frowned but ignored me as I stood up and left not excusing myself. I walked back to my room and sat on my bed staring at the lifeless phone sitting on my dresser. I sighed and pushed the battery into the back of the phone. I let life begin to whir in the handy work of the machinery in my hand. I set it down on my nightstand and get dressed. I take off my shirt and see my pale skin. I quickly pull off my jeans and slap some shorts on that hung a little over my knees. I laid down and fell asleep shortly after.
