_____________________________I flickered my eyes open and see Sam sprawled out over me. His leg wrapped around both of mine and the back of his palm on my forehead. I pushed his hand off of my face and sat up, rubbing my eyes. His plaid, blue bedding splayed over us.
There were only a few moments of silence before I heard his voice creep up from behind me:"Good morning-" Sam stretched his legs, and pointed his toes—which peaked out from underneath the blanket.
I smile, "Good morning." I glance back at him, to which he pinched my arm.
"Ow-" I hold my bicep, "What was that for?"
"Being a blanket hog."
I pinch his side, which forced out a yelp from him. "That's for taking up most of the bed."
"Whatever."
I smile a little and look at my slide phone which I had in my rope pocket. It had three missed calls from James.
"Great..."Sam sat up and looked over my shoulder, "What's up?"
"James called me and hand full of times." I slide the phone shut and look at him. Sam takes the phone and then looks at me, his eyes a tiny bit puffy from sleep, his hair messy from his pillow, his lips pink with a sharp Cupid's bow.
"Who needs him." The point of his chin was only an inch away from my shoulder. He was so close... I could feel his breath, I felt his hand pressed into the mattress behind my back as he lean forward—I instinctively did the same. I felt some magnetizing pull that tugged me to him.
We were so close...then...
The door flew open and hit the wall, it bounced back a few feet. Sam and I jumped apart from each other.
"Gooooood morning, party of two," A boy in shorts, tall white socks with red stripes going around the calf, a puffy red vest and a band t-shirt stood in the door way, as he brushed through his permed hair.
"Good morning, Josh," Sam whipped the blankets to the side and got up, still in his clothes from yesterday.
"How are you, neighbor girl?"
"You know my name Josh." I tuck my hair behind my ears and slowly get up, "And I'm doing okay."
He grins with his white teeth, "Breakfast is ready." He said as a boy with long hair slinks past him, the quickly peers back into the room.
"Oh and a uh- Samuel...mom wants to know why there is a cigarette on the porch," His other brother, Jake, who when I was little we would all play 'royalty' and he liked to be called
Sir Jacob Thomas Kiszka, he barley grew up on the inside but he blossomed into a handsome man.Sam sighs, Jake snickers and runs downstairs. Josh winks, "Get ready, she's a beast this morning." Josh left without closing the door.
"Hungry?" Sam asked.
"No, I think I'm going to head out, actually, thank you though." I untie and retie my robe and walk out of his room, bare foot past him family and I throw the cigarette into the bushes and brush away the ash before walking across the street—back to my house.
I stared at the '(3) missed call from James' for about ten minutes before calling him back. As the dial tone kicked in my sat on my bed and hugged my knees."Thank god you actually called me back, why didn't you answer?"
"I slept in."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. So wanna hang out again today? I had a great time last night."
I closed my eyes and sighed, "I don't know."
"Uh- what do you mean you don't know?" He scoffs, "You mad at me or something?"
"No, no, no, I'm not mad it's just I'm not feeling too good today."
"I can come over and make you feel better? Will that be okay?"
How bad could that be
"Sure, that will be perfect actually."
"Be over in ten." He hung up, I close my phone and then put on presentable clothing and walked down to the living room and sat on the couch. My parents were working, nothing taking some overtime because we were short on money at the moment. No one knew that though—that was none of their business.
. . .
I heard James' loud ass car pull into the driveway at about 1:20.
He knocked on the door before opening it, "hey hey hey Princess, how's it going?"I look at him, "fine."
He furrowed his brows, "Yikes, you look horrible." He walked over, "You sick?"
"No...I don't have makeup on."
"Oh it's more than that...but hey, you said you were feeling good, it's okay not be ugly some days."
"Um-"
James cut me off, "I have those days, though it's not very often I have a bad day or an ugly day."
I glare at him, "Right. As I was saying— I don't feel good because I didn't want you to have sex with me last night—but you forced me."
"Forced you?" He sits next to me, "I never forced you."
"Yes, you did. I said no. I said to stop but you didn't. So I gave up."
"I thought you just liked rough stuff, like I thought you were roleplaying."
"I wouldn't role-play crying."
"Some people are into that, I'm sorry, I didn't realize."
"I guess...yeah."
"I brought you some flowers but they are in my car, let's go get them." He pulls me up and out of my front door. I squint from the morning sun blinding me unexpectedly.
Suddenly the sun was blocked by a bouquet of brightly colored flowers tied together with white ribbon. I slowly smile, "James...""Do you like them?" He grins.
"I do, they are so pretty." I hug him, "Thank you so much."
James lifts my chin and kisses me softly, "You're very welcome, now get in—we are going on a date."
I giggle and get in the car, cautiously holding the bouquet not wanting to damage any of the petals.
"Where are we going?" I slowly spin the floral arrangement.
"We are going to go to the trails and walk, if that's okay?" He starts the car.
"Yeah, yeah, that's fine." I couldn't help but smile as he pulls out of my drive way. The one my parents were barley parked in.
He was being sweet.
I can't believe he was being sweet.
