~Non-Challenge Day~
"No!" Zane whined Duncan knocked over his sand structure. It was Zane's first time building a sand castle, at least he thought it was since he didn't remember building any as a child. "Oh relax, just rebuild it," Duncan said picking himself up after tripping over the sad pile of sand Zane made. Zane sat in the sand in his swimwear and pouted looking up at the juvenile. "Well, now I don't want to!" he huffed childishly. "It was an accident, stop looking like I killed your family," Duncan sighed ruffling Zane's hair. "I will bite you!" Zane said smacking the taller boy's hand away.
"Chill. I'll help you, just stop whining," Duncan said picking up the buckets and getting sand and water. Zane just sat there stubbornly not looking at the other male. "Really?" Duncan asked poking Zane's arm, "You're ignoring me now?" Zane just continued to stare in the opposite direction. "It was just a sand castle," he sighed at the other boy's behaviour. "It was my first sand castle, and you ruined it!" he whined. "First? Wait, you've never built one before?" he asked stunned. "Beaches don't exactly exist in my town," Zane huffed. "Do sandboxes not exist there either?" Duncan joked.
"The only sandbox I've been in was in preschool and it was always getting hogged by the same group of girls. The one time I was able to use it was when the girls refused to go in it cause there was a wasp in it," he sighed. "You should've just kicked them out," Duncan laughed at his story. Zane gave him a grumpy glare and stood up brushing the sand off his legs. "Maybe I should kick you out of the cabin," he mumbled walking away. He knew it was immature behaviour, but he didn't care.
~Time Skip~
Zane sat on his bed now in his regular clothes sulking. He knows he shouldn't be so upset but he was. He didn't get to enjoy the luxury of beaches as a child, he went to a lake once but it wasn't a fun trip when you can't swim.
"Hey," Duncan said sitting on Zane's bed. Zane just hummed in response. "I'm sorry about your sand castle," he sighed looking at the smaller boy. "You should be," Zane huffed before sitting up. Duncan wrapped his arm around Zane's shoulder and pulled him into a side hug. "I really am, I just didn't think that much of it. I guess I forgot not everyone gets the same stuff growing up," he whispered to Zane. "I'm sorry for overreacting," Zane mumbled. "Hm?" Duncan said even though he heard him. "I'm sorry," Zane said. "Apology accepted, dork," Duncan chuckled. Zane gave a small smile.
"I just didn't get to have fun trips to places like beaches as a kid, hell we rarely went to the community pool. My mom would always promise to take my brothers and me swimming, but she never kept her promise," Zane sighed and leaned into Duncan's side. "Is that why you don't make promises when you know you probably can't keep them?" Duncan asked. "Yeah, I just don't want to get someone's hopes up just to ruin them as my mom did for me all those years," he replied.
"You had a lot of stuff that happened and it changed the way you make decisions, huh?" Duncan said looking down into Zane's eyes. The smaller boy nodded. "I'm working on myself though, to be the best person I can be. It's slowly happening and that's something to be proud of, making progress," he mumbled.
"Well I think you're amazing," Duncan said with a small smile. "I think lunch would be amazing," Zane chuckled. "Really? I compliment you and all you think of is food?" Duncan laughed. "Fries before guys handsome, deal with it," Zane laughed crawling over Duncan to get out of the bunk.
