HAZEL’S POV

Hazel looked carefully at the man in the rainbow - no, the Iris message - realising that she was looking at the legendary centaur, the teacher of all the great Ancient Greek heroes. What Lupa was to her, this centaur, Chiron, was to them.

He had a scruffy beard, slightly long hair, and an expression of extreme urgency and fear. He looked like he hadn’t slept for days - which may well be true, seeing as how he knew that Roman demigods were in the vicinity, preparing for war.

“Piper? Is Percy okay? Where is he?” he asked worriedly.

Hold on. How had he known that Percy wasn’t with us?

Then another, more terrifying thought struck her.

If he knew, then was there any reason that others shouldn’t? Octavian? Gaea?

Oh, no.

Piper looked at Chiron, her voice scared and cracking as she whispered, “We don’t know Chiron. We don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know? And where is Annabeth?” Chiron looked like he was going to have a full-fledged panic attack.

Hazel felt someone’s gaze on her. Cassandra. Another new puzzle. She wished life would stop throwing surprises at her like this. Their gazes met, and in that instance, she knew for certain that Cassandra was thinking exactly what she was - who else knew about what had happened?

Not being able to hold herself anymore, despite the fact that she didn’t know the man in front of her at all, she interrupted Chiron, “How did you know about Percy not being there?” She tried to not let her voice tremble, but she was sure that Chiron noticed it anyway. He seemed that kind of person - observant. Chiron turned to look at her. There were so many lines on his forehead that she didn’t think she would ever be able to count them.

“Grover,” he said slowly, not taking his eyes off her, “he collapsed. He’s a satyr - a faun, in your case. He and Percy share an empathy link. Each can feel when the other is in danger. When Grover came to, he was in shock. He couldn’t speak - except for mumbling that Percy isn’t there with you anymore.”

Everyone was silent. Chiron ran his gaze over everyone, lingering on Frank for a second, whom he hadn’t seen before. Cassandra was the only one out of his line of sight. Maybe on purpose.
