Chapter 65,"Parasomnia"
━━━━━━━━━━━━
"You don't have to keep coming back here, Katherine." Deaton tells me as I put away supplies back into their respected places. I turn back towards him and smile lightly.
"I know, but I like to help when I can." I say and he smiles back.
"Thank you." He says and I nod.
Scott writes away on a piece of paper, concentrating on it, when the bells from the front door chime. We all look over towards the lobby from the backroom, not able to see anything past the wall. Deaton rounds the metal table, walking through the threshold into the lobby. Scott and I listen to who it could be.
"Well hello, Miss. Flemming." Deaton greets and my heart skips a beat. I share a look with Scott, our emotions a mix between surprise and happiness. We simultaneously head out into the lobby and when I see her, I almost melt.
Little Stephanie Flemming stands in front of the desk, her small hands holding onto her dogs leash tightly. The little black and white dog sits nervously beside her small frame. I take in her appearance since I haven't seen her since she was three, at her mom's funeral. She has to be five now, yet she looks like she's grown so much. She looks a lot like Christine.
"Katherine!" She squeals excitedly. The dog flinches at her sudden outburst and I chuckle. Scott quickly takes the leash from the girl before she wraps her arms around my waist. I accept the hug, rubbing her back comfortingly.
"Hi, Stephanie." I say happily before taking her hands in mine, kneeling down at her level. "So, what brings you here?" I ask and she smiles.
"Teddy needs his checkup." She says, her voice small but filled with joy.
"Oh, alright," I say. "Well, while Scott and Dr. Deaton give Teddy his checkup, you and I can sit here in the lobby and wait." I tell her and she nods.
"Okay!" She turns away from me, running off to go take a seat. I laugh lightly while standing up, turning towards Scott.
"Take your time." I tell him and he nods before him and Deaton guide the dog into the backroom.
I walk over to Stephanie, taking a seat right beside her. Her legs swing below her as she can't yet reach the ground. Stephanie smiles up at me and I smile back.
"How have you been, Steph?" I ask.
"Really good!" She answers with a giggle. "School has been lots of fun." She tells me.
"Yeah? You like school?"
"Mhm." Stephanie responds with. I so badly want to talk about Christine, but I know Stephanie barely remembers her and I don't want to upset her.
